"God is Dead" ("Gott ist tot") is a widely quoted statement by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

Nietzsche used the phrase in a figurative sense, to express the idea that the Enlightenment had killed the possibility of belief in God or any gods having ever existed. But proponents of the strongest form of the Death of God theology have used the phrase in a literal sense, meaning that the Christian God who existed at one point, has ceased to exist.

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?
- Nietzsche, The Gay Science

Nietzsche is an interesting historical figure, with some interesting ideas, and whose work has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history.

There?s an old joke I read on a wall somewhere:
?God is dead? ? Nietzsche
?Nietzsche is dead? ? God

?and it seems that Nietzsche and his philosophical ideas are more alivethen ever, so I figured he?s undead and made him into a zombie in this illustration.
