As you may know, this is a replication of the jacket appearing in the famous ‘Thriller’ video, after studying and finding anything I could about the original jacket is when I’ve started this design. I made a mock-up and starting working on that, thankfully thanks to some inspiration from similar ‘tuxedo’ print on shirts I came into making this. After countless hours of studying the famous red jacket and working on this design, this is the result.

The Tree of Life

The title and overall theme was inspired by the film, The Fountain in which the Tree of Life plays a pivotal role. I had originally drawn the two women but had no way to compose them into a piece together until I thought of the perhaps cliche theme of a Tree of Life in which the excessive line art that makes up their hair forms the basic structure of the tree and is of a similar texture to "generic tree bark". For the t-shirt I removed the grey background and toned down some of the random colours/shapes that I felt were needed for a good composition on normal print work and most importantly I changed the colour of the scribble behind the larger of the two heads, as on a t-shirt black just wasn’t working.

The original design is 42 × 60cm and here is a 12.5% scaled version for screen:

I have a problem making decisions on almost everything, especially what I’m going to draw next. I usually just start with some swirly designs and just add random things throughout the piece. Even after working on something for a while I never think it’s done and it’s really annoying. So this is the product of my indecision on the day I decided to pick up my pen and try to create something.

This design is created using a Black Plastisol with silver shimmer (which can’t easily be depicted in the rendering), a Cool Gray 4 for the lighter tones and a separate screen for the skull which is printed with black and a puff additive to ad texture to the design.
