ha funny buzatron I used that site to get live shows of Phish and the Grateful Dead…never knew they had books, cool! And thanks for the link BPhantom

yup they have books with pictures even, mostly all out of copyright ;)

In this case, like in any collage, it’s the comp that makes the gig… comp is the essence of collage I’d say, and many famous and brilliant true artists (heartfield, dadaists, Ernst, rodchenko, etc.) did an nobody went after them so lets be a little open minded here…+1 great work.

if you made it yourself i would vote for it…cus it looks badass…but since the most badass part was taken from a vector site….sorry

why do you even comment if you have some elitist attitude that everything must be a hand done illustration… like vcalahan said above its all about execution and composition, fyi…most graphic designers are not illustrators, yet are visual artists, and wtf I did make it I just used existing elements that are available to any designer out there, get off your high horse, you use photography in your work is that cheating since you didn’t actually “hand” render that pffff

He did take the pictures himself though.

And he has a point; The main feature of this design, the head, wasn’t made by you. I’ve expressed elsewhere that I have absolutely nothing against using other’s content in your own design, as long as you use it with in the licence and everything. What I think though, is that if you do use other’s content, you should mention that you used other’s work or thank the creator of the work somewhere, whether it be on the image or in the description.

This is still a cool design though.

okay this debate is kind of a dead subject, stuff like this has been called out a million times before, either you like it or you don’t, I don’t see people crediting everyone on deviant for all the brushes and vectors they are getting off of their to use in their work but anyway a big special thanks goes out to some dead guy from the 1800’s for the anatomy engraving.

It’s not really a “dead subject” if you use brushes and vectors it basically means you can’t just plonk it in the middle of a t shirt and call it your own. I agree that you have been quite creative with the design you have here but is it or is it not coincidental that the same image was used for “Ingkong’s” design and then was taken off? There are a few questions that I think need to be answered for…

+1 for me..

daletheskater, it is a dead subject, I work for an apparel company(that has a huge legal department) I know the legality of everything I use, whether it be photography my own or public domain, clip art, vectors, hand renderings, I make my own brushes so I know I’m good, or what have you….I don’t know what Ingkong’s design was but it sounds like it was an exact rip off of the “actual” Hangover shirt (they sell it at Urban Outfitters and on Amazon among others), which uses copyright free illustrations in it as well, the problem is it sounds like it was the same composition of whomever made that shirt, which becomes a new work and is subject to copyright, it was collaged using copyright free images but once compiled becomes the work of “said” individual and cannot be duplicated, the anatomy image is still usable by any individual as long as it is a new work or composition it just can’t be the same thing….I don’t want to drag other artists on this site into this debate with names b/c I love some of their work which uses collage( and I stand behind their kind of work), there are plenty of shirts for sale on DBH right now that use Dover Clip Art, Public Domain Photography, Vectors, Brushes, or whatever else that is legitimately free for any artist, designer to use, and intertwine with their own renderings, etc. Its all part of a designers arsenal but to truly execute a good piece takes an “artist” b/c at the end of the day if it was so easy to make something sweet there would be a whole lot better submissions rolling in I guess, but what do I know, I’d say I’m done weighing in on this, take it to the forum and ask the staff directly if it chaps your ass so much

I don’t mean to cause any argument either.I agree with you partly…I wish there didn’t have to be a dispute behind every design because as you say at the end of the day there are alot of designers using all sorts of methods to come up with great designs. As i said earlier though I still believe that a great design can use these elements as long as they are used in a manner that don’t obviously imitate existing design and are used in a thoughtful/ expressive way that doesn’t cause dispute…because lets face it…80 – 90% of most designs don’t come under any scrutiny at all.

nicely done period.

I think the discussion was more about “legally / morally right”. Not that stock images were used.

daleconcepts daleconcepts Artist from Philippines

man I agree … you just need a reference for design idea ,, and you don’t need to do it manually , what matters most is the execution and making it more beautiful and collaborative as long as it not near on the original reference.. creativity gets through on and on… not everyone can draw pretty well but has a good sense of digital technique to manipulate …

for me nicely done and very well executed ,, neat ,nice collaboration or whatever we call it and sick line art work … +1

i don’t care about where this is from. haha although i agree that stating where it’s from wuda stopped the debating, it wouldn’t show on the shirt anyway. if it did, the design is ruined. either way! i wish this would get printed!
