The main idea I had in mind while conceptualizing this illustration was – A SENSE OF WONDER. A feeling I get upon seeing something that is perhaps ordinary, in an extraordinary way. I incorporated that idea into this print in two ways – as an illustration, and as a shirt.
As an illustration, I used a drawing style that stimulates the imagination. Trees that seem to be melting into the ocean. A cliff face that extends up onto the inky black of the sky. Spindly clouds stroking the face of the moon. Waves that swirl and crash into themselves in a way that doesn’t really happen in nature.
As a shirt, I tried to embrace the concept of a sense of wonder with the way the print is positioned and cropped. We normally expect to see the print on a shirt somewhere in the middle. I was hoping it would be possible to have it bleed onto one sleeve, go all the way to the bottom and up onto the collar – images invading areas where they aren’t usually found, and almost wrapping itself around the wearer. I composed the print in a way that hopefully invites the viewer to continue the landscape in their minds.
And perhaps everyone will see something different with their mind’s eye when they see this design.
OPTIONS & VARIATIONS:
I have a thing for glow-in-the-dark designs, and it seemed fitting with my concept so here we go. Just throwing this out there as an option. :)
Pictured in the submission image is an allover print on a navy shirt.
Women’s tee version, allover print on a navy shirt.
However, I’m not sure if the color limitations for allover prints will be able to accommodate my design so I made mock-ups for an oversized print as a backup.
Oversized print on a black shirt. This is how it’ll look on larger sized shirts. For smaller sizes it might look closer to the overall, based on my experimentation with the size template.
Women’s tee version.
wow this totally reminds me of turn of the century children’s book illustrations. excellent work! glo-in-the-dark option would be RAD! +1
Very cool. I love your style! Glow in the dark would be very cool if it could be used. :)
I really, really like this! My only concern is that it appears to be more than 3 colors – the limit for an all over print.
Interesting composition. Lots of cool breaks of space and nice colors.
This definitely has to win! Because I really, really want to buy it. :D
hope you win, amazing desing!
Thanks so much, everyone!
@Karyn2002: Ah, I understand your concern. That crossed my mind too. I was thinking instead of allover, it could just be an oversized print on a black shirt. The illustration could remain pretty much the same, it’s just that the sleeve that’s pictured blue on the photo would be black instead. Though I feel like I might be able to recalibrate the colors (turquoise, black and either bone white or very light grey) to fit the limit. I’ll give it a shot. :)
goodness tradional painting..+1
I LOVE THIS! I love the colors and the swirls are practically magical. Great job on this! :3
really beautiful, I love the colors and the swirls really help tie this together amazingly. Here’s to hoping this gets printed and soon!
amazing work…dark but tranquil :) Love the consistency of the waves over the water and the moon :)
This is truly sublime. I love the abstract work you’ve done that makes it very dark but at the same time beautiful and a small sense of romance seeing the aurora lights below. I do hope that this shirt wins because this is art. And hopefully for women’s too! xD
Thank you, everyone!
@Midnight_Melody: I actually did do a women’s tee draft too! Thanks for reminding me! I’ll add it onto my first comment above.
