Please also check out the forums as I’ve posted a quick note about how the majority of my winnings (if this shirt goes on to be printed) will be used to buy some fun shirts to send to men and women who are serving overseas this upcoming holiday season as a small thank you for all that they do.

Noble sentiment, but the shirt has kind of a sinister tone. Why would a cartridge be a fitting memorial for a soldier? Traditionally a bullet is used in imagery as a threat where a helmet is more often used as an homage. Furthermore this looks like a .308 Winchester or maybe a .338 Lapua, both of which are sniper cartridges. Again that has a sinister connotation, especially with the “memoria” right by the slug. I also don’t really see the context of the graphic flourishes. I don’t know, I find the entire design to be unsettling as a memorial day tee.

I would say that if you’re going to honor the soldier, honor the man or woman, not the equipment they carry. Or in this case the equipment that may very well be used against them.

All valid points, I just wanted to make a design that brought the dark tones and emotions of a soldier’s reality to light. The fact is that these people do die for us everyday (including people I have grown up with) and that is taken for granted. I think when you really think about the brutality and devistating loss that soldiers deal with, the more you appreciate what they do, more so than when you see a flag or a helmet, etc. I guess I chose the bullet imagery as a ‘monumental’ image to that suffering.

I think everyone views the service of soldiers and honors/remembers them in a different way, and this is just what hits home with me more than any other.

I see what you’re saying, but I don’t think that translates to your design. This reads like a glorification of violence. That’s not necessarily a bad concept for a design given the right context, but I really don’t think this is the right context. This subject hits home for me too, I’ve done an homage for soldiers as well. You also talk about the individual way that we all approach this, and I agree. I think that’s another problem, this piece needs more personality. More individuality. It feels very much like it has stock graphics in it, which may not be the case, but I think it needs a more intimate touch.

Appreciate all the feedback, I definately see what you are saying…maybe at some point I will do another shirt that addresses things in a different light.

Don’t get discouraged. I understand what your trying to put across. I like the design the way it is, in its simplicity it speaks. Though different people see it different ways, it doesnt matter. Everyone sees art in a different way. Good work, +1 from me.
