As long as you are adding fantasy elements to the shadows (the cupid, bouquet of hearts, etc.) why not play with the humans’ shadows instead of having them be so literal? Maybe have the nerdy boy’s shadow look like a knight in armor or a troubadour, or maybe have it look like he is on his knees proposing? Or go a different direction and make it ominous, with his shadow having devil’s horns and tail and hers having angel’s wings (or vice-versa)?
