As hard as it to believe I actually know where the inspiration for this one came from. I know most of my strolls down memory lane deal with our long friendship, and my life long adoration of the internet’s favorite t-shirt designer; but this one is different.
It was summer in the late 80’s I can’t remember the year. It was sweltering hot, and most of our swimming spots were nearly dried up. Boots, and I spent much of the days running the neighbors makeshift sprinkler systems into their basement windows, and spying on the Spiglemyer kids in the garage… well nevermind what they were doing. Suffice to say their parents shouldn’t have left those videos out. Anyway, Boots and I had gotten bored with our daily routine, and decided that it would fun to make our own…better butterflies.We started out by collecting butterflies from around the neighborhood. Then Boots like a seasoned surgeon used a scalpel to remove their wings, and legs. We spent hours cutting apart paper clips into little metal legs, and supergluing them on to the remaining stumps. Our mechabutterfly warriors were really coming together. Tick, tick, tick, they walked around the wooden desk in her room.
Boots, fueled by our earlier success spent hours designing the perfect wings, strong, fast, and better than God’s version… or so we hoped. We glued so many beautifully crafted wings to the butterfly bodies that day. Some were too heavy, some wouldn’t stick, some just plain never made it off the drawing board. It was exhausting. I did something I had done many times before, and laid back on her bed for a little cat nap. I woke up what felt like hours later, though it could have minutes…no, it was longer minutes, it had to be. I woke up to a loud crack, and boots squealing “fly butterfly, FLY!” I felt a searing pain across my torso that sent me straight up into the air. I realized that Boots was drawing back her authentic Lady Cowboy bull whip for another crack at me. I ran for the door to find in barricaded shut. I just ran around the room, as fast as I could. Crack, snap, “FLY BUTTERFLY, FLY!” Boots yelled again.It was at the point I tripped over my pants that were balled up on the floor that I realized exactly what was happening. Boots had given up on the butterflies, stripped me down, taken her favorite wings, and glued them to my ahem man parts. I was now her butterfly, and she was making me perform. Things are a little hazy after my realization. I ripped one of the wings off when I tripped, and whether is was the pain, or the blood; I definitely passed out.
I may never know exactly how I ended up in the ER, or what Boots told my parents about the incident. My parents said they promised to never discuss it, and Boots just giggles and accuses me of trying to get her to talk about my “butterfly”.
