using Adobe Illustrator i started with a single line about 10 pts. wide and created all the paths. then, using that as a guide, went back over the edges of the lines with the brush tool. everywhere the lines crossed i alternated between putting one path under or over the path it crossed. the whole thing took around 8 to 10 hours to complete, working on it an hour or so a day.
