13169

Thanks for the comments and to those of you who voted for the design.

doctorhodt: Thanks, much appreciated. I wasn’t sure if this was DBH material either, so before I made the design, I contacted the DBH staff. I asked them if the design idea was appropriate and they said it was fine. So here it is. :)

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

This is not DBH material. Not at all because the art is bad, because it isn’t, but I can’t see why anyone would want to wear his face on their chest.

13169
said about 1 year ago

TheLonelyBulfry: Thanks. I think this design is definitely DBH material. Style and taste are subjective, especially here on DBH. If you want designs that are more status quo, I suggest you check out Walmart or maybe Target.

Below are some possible reasons a person might want to wear this shirt (and/or a shirt with Obama on it):

- To show their support for Obama and his run for president.
- They think Obama is sexy and they want everyone to know it.
- They love black men and this shirt expresses that love.
- They like shirts with big portraits on them.
- They like the colors.
- They like Cloxboy’s art so much they want to wear it.
- They want to wear the shirt just to spite you.

Those are just a few logical reasons I’ve thought up to wear this shirt, I imagine there are a few more.

bogoio: Whether it’s a portrait of a politician from the US or bunnies in a flower patch, no single design is going to be appreciated by everyone. Why? Because we’re all different and yes, we all come from different parts of the world. I’ve been asked to get this shirt printed by a few people already and once it’s out of the DBH voting, I’ll sell it to a vendor. Most of the designs I see on sites like DBH are made by amateurs and opportunists, which are primarily bought by teenagers and fashion victims. I’m not saying my style is completely original but I certainly don’t intend to associate myself with the slue of trendy, rehashed and overdone designers that currently plague the indie t-shirt market.

oligark: “this is not fashion, shut up” Do everyone a big favor, have that quote printed (or better yet embroidered) on all of the clothing you own.

By doing this, all the people you encounter will receive a visual warning of the absolute ignorance that’s within their midsts. People can never be too safe when it comes to keeping belligerent morons out of their lives.

Wear this now because in a few years he’ll be a mere mortal again like the other scandalous politicians. When that much “hope” rests on one person, he will eventually fail us. Nice details on the design though.

Human_thumbnail_unknown

stop politicizing an amazing shirt that does not express support but merely commemorates an important event in american history: the first viable black candidate for president. i would wear this because it is a great shirt, just as i would wear a shirt emblazoned with the image of geraldine ferraro.

18199
said about 1 year ago

I wish the models wouldn’t hold the sides of the shirt. It gives a false persona that the shirt is close fit. These shirts are def. not close fit. BUT with that out of the way, GOOD PICK DBH. this is going to be so unique for all those obama fans, like myself. corgrats

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

vTweak’s comment above = win.

it’s a good portrait, although I’m not sure about Obama. but yeah, it shouldn’t even be about the politics. I just wish DBH had done 2 shirts in one day (one for mccain) to keep it a neutral site. would’ve been better taste.

the color scheme could have been a bit better though.

35196
said about 1 year ago

hmm… if you want to really send a true PRO PEACE message, one that is of a true underdog status and for the average person – PRINT RON PAUL. I’ll make the shirt myself.

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

The shirt should be blue considering he is a democrat

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

ahaha do any conservatives here complaining about not having a mccain shirt realize how disgusting a giant print of john mccain would look

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

it doesn’t have to be the same design as this if it were a mccain shirt. I’m sure someone could think of a pleasant way to represent mccain. [i’m not conservative btw, I just think it would be in good taste to represent both candidates equally]

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

Go-bama and all, but being Canadian I cannot see myself wearing this. Love the shirt though, keep em’ coming!

Human_thumbnail_unknown

it would’ve been in better taste to have a mccain shirt to keep this site neutral? thats seriously one of the most ridiculous things i’ve ever heard. this is a t-shirt site, not msnbc.com.

Surprised there hadn’t been a good shirt for him w/his image yet, with all the countless other things for such.

51109
said about 1 year ago

Wooo! not only do i love the shirt, i too think Obama is fantastic! OBAMA 08!!!!

51109
said about 1 year ago

Some comments mentioned how we should’nt bring politics into this, but i think the artists on here are free to use any subject that inspires them. & with Obama, how can you not be inspired by a man who accomplished & wants to do so much to better our country. Politics might be harsh at times & you may think there’s no place for it here, but its simply unavoidable. Politics is a very important thing in any society. Its how us, humans, come together to help create a better place to live.

& hey, the shirts on here, are afterall, designed by humans.

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

Reasons I hate politics. DING DING. I love designbyhumans but really. I don’t enjoy being fed peoples political opinions in every thing I’m a part of.

Human_thumbnail_unknown

Good Portrait though.

5393

Wow, a healthy number of comments for this one – I wonder why, hmmmmmm? Frankly, as a T-shirt design this one really stinks – way too garish for my taste – what is with the ORANGE shouting at me? I just can’t imagine too many people wearing this one…

32859
said about 1 year ago

I am sorry, I would not wear this shirt ever. This man is not ready to lead the country.. and in my opinion will never be! cool illustration/style though.

12665
said about 1 year ago

i am 1000% sick of Obama shirts, they are in every store in Boston, and New York. i’m trying to get over my seething hatred for the subject matter(because everyone is head over heels in love with someone that should wait and try to make another bid at the presidency in 15 years) and look at the art, but i don’t know if it’s that or if i really just don’t like the shirt and the facial/color treatment?
congrats on the win though.
i should make a Ron Paul one.

Human_thumbnail_unknown

ron paul is a cunt. get over your senseless love for another old white guy.

13169
said about 1 year ago

Thanks for the positive comments and constructive criticisms.

True, the head was printed far larger than I intended it to be and the colors are far brighter than the original artwork. Not sure why they made those changes but it’s DBH artwork now.

10110
said about 1 year ago

first of all, nothing against the designer, great design.
but MOST of all, FAIL DBH!!!!
picking sides? REALLY??? and the wrong side to boot.
no more pepper money for you!

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

Picking sides? It’s not Design by Humans job to be politically neutral…it’s their job to print shirts that will sell and appeal to people…and by all accounts the majority of people like him over McCain, so why wouldn’t they?

10110
said about 1 year ago

majority? what planet are you on?

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

have you looked at any polls?

Human_thumbnail_unknown

43975
said about 1 year ago

Boo-urns. I like this site because the designs are usually quite artistic and the meaning of them is very rarely black-and-white, as is true of any decent art. Now we have a shirt with a political candidate on. How literal can you get? Seriously lame, even though the portrait is well-done and I’m most likely going to vote for the man. Way to bring the tone down.

25960

He already has hundreds of people selling obama shirts for him, hell I was at Lollapalooza and they had an official Obama store tent there, I love DBH but as guitarguru88 said, I don’t want to see this kind of material. This is a self portrait, not art.

13169
said about 1 year ago

IMBE: This is not a “self-portrait” because that would require me to be Obama, which I’m not. How is this not art? Maybe if I threw some swirls and trendy colors together, you’d think that was “art”? Portrait art, particularly this type of illustrative portrait art, requires style development, line art composition, facial anatomy knowledge, color composition, building up form with light & color, as well knowledge of graphic design and Adobe Illustrator. Now, to make a collage or design based t-shirt, one requires far less artistic ability. This fact is evident by the constant influx of collage based t-shirts posted on DBH and everywhere else, they’re easy to do.
I’m not going to explain why a shirt picturing Obama is a valid and relevant design to be sold on DBH because 1) I already listed reasons in a comment on the original submission page and 2) it’s unaccountable to argue this design shouldn’t be printed on DBH, it reveals a complete misunderstanding of what DBH represents and it’s goals, i.e. they didn’t print this against their will.

19261
said about 1 year ago

I was reading all the comments and I thought that the one about making it blue because he’s a democrat was interesting. Mainly because the artist choose to make it in orange, which is the opposite color of blue. On a deeper level is this shirt promoting or putting down the candidate based on the color alone? Just a thought I found amusing. Maybe orange should be the color of a third political party?

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

I like how u can see the lines where this was folded lol

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

Honestly I don’t think this is the kind of shirt that should be on DBH. I’m an Obama supporter, but this a place for great designs and art. You know, cool shirts that can look good on anyone. Shirts here shouldn’t have a political messages or endorse candidates.

Sorry, DBH is just such a great site I hold it to high standards :)

Human_thumbnail_unknown

It seems as if people are offended, because…art is being used to make a statement? Yeah, that makes sense!

13169
said about 1 year ago

Reikachu: Lol, well said.

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said about 1 year ago

Well done Cloxboy. Don’t listen to all the naysayers. Anything and everything is or could be a muse for an artist’s expression. The fact that this is on this site and not being sold to profit the Obama campaign indicates that it is other than political. Orange is a color of courage and strength. Maybe a truly good human being who professes great ideals, along with courage and strength is just too scary for some people. Obama is a historical figure, and you have captured a piece of history.

Human_thumbnail_unknown

DOWN WITH OBAMA!!!!!!!!! We all know that McCain could KILL him in a knife fight don’t we… thats what really counts…

34876

Obama is not a historical figure…please don’t say that again, because that is insulting to important historicl figures

47510
said about 1 year ago

You can’t say he isn’t or is a historical figure until we all see what happens in November, & he’s not doing a bad job at earning the title of an historical figure. + Why are we on this subject? We’re suppose to give kuddos and say stuff about the design. Not people/information behind it.
+Reikachu. Your awesome for that.

I like it. The orange does kinda, punch you in the face though.

Man there are alot of HATERS! On this site! Great design Cloxboy! I believe people are just scared that he’s gonna win. Great statement with this design, it has sparked a lot of interest. I will be promoting this shirt until it sells out completely!

27963
said about 1 year ago

I am not endorsing Obama, however, he is certainly creating new interest in the American democratic system. Young people are signing up to vote en masse. Who’s to say they won’t look around and find a different candidate who their beliefs are more closely aligned with? (There are other parties out there.) People are getting all disgusted about this design (“Neo-con!”, “Democrat!”, etc.), but listen, you’re not helping your cause. Face it, Obama is an intelligent and inspiring man. I’d say that’s a pretty good role model for the American youth, regardless of whether you choose to vote for him or someone else. And most of all, please respect other people’s opinions, even if they decide to put them on a T-shirt and sell it.

Wow, this shirt is tight! Great design and color choice, it is really dynamic! that said.. I really hope Obama doesn’t win.. Enough of my money goes to the government without me being FORCED to get Health insurance that I don’t need (haven’t been to a hospital in 14 years, what can I say, I never get sick) and his policies just seem so.. Socialist..

13169
said about 1 year ago

jonmkl: Thanks. That been said, who is forcing you to pay health insurance? Obama is not a socialist, if you believe that, you’ve been severely misguided. I think it’s safe to say both socialism and capitalism have failed, there’s evidence of this all over the world. However, fundamentally both systems have redeeming qualities, qualities that should not be ignored merely because they were born out of a larger, failed system. That’s what progress is all about, trial and error, keeping what works and leaving the rest behind.

64829
said about 1 year ago

This must be amazing art with all the controversy demonstrated in the comments. Kudos to the artist! For those of you upset by political statements – if indeed that is what this is, which I doubt – since when hasn’t art been about a point of view? Every artist demonstrates a point of view in their art – be it political or otherwise. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. We live in a democracy last I checked. No one is stopping anyone from expressing their point of view through their art – you just need to have it appeal to enough people to get voted into print. Why so much anger instead of congratulating a fellow artist on their achievement?

Seeing all of these negative comments really makes me sick. When someone puts a lot of effort into making a shirt, you aren’t suppose to say they shouldn’t get money for it. I, personally, was undecided in this election, but it’s still a good design and it should be treated as such.

Human_thumbnail_unknown
said 9 months ago

I just bought this shirt, and it looks very pleasing to the eye! I for one do not fray over political morality and conflicts of that nature. Nor do I see a problem in having a face of a president by using artistic abilities and great array of colors placed on a T-shirt!
