i like it! it should look really nice printed with the discharge ink.
I am basically in love with shirts that move the designs outside of the chest and back, and this does it as well as I’ve seen.
Love it, but I don’t understand what discharge ink is, and I’m wondering how that sleeve would be an entirely different color. Definitely like the look of this though.
Discharge is basically a bleaching agent that is used to take the color out of the shirt. Discharge can be applied as raw discharge or tinted discharge. Raw discharge will give a dark-colored shirt a bleached look, and tinted discharge results in a more muted tone of the ink color that is used.

How heavy is the white print? Given the size and thickness of the print – does it breathe? Is the shirt stiff and uncomfortable? There’s no question it LOOKS amazing – but how does it wear?
I just got my shirt today. I must say it looks fantastic, and I am glad I got my copy. D-Ball: The ink is a bit stiff. Due to the type of ink/varnish used and the large degree of coverage, breathing will be an issue, but not a big one I think since the ink is only on one side in the front – there will be plenty of opportunity for air movement laterally. I guess other ink would not have offered the type of opaque coverage needed.
This totally must be reprinted in smaller sizes! I look like a walking tent when I am in anything larger than a medium-sized t-shirt! Great design though, very interesting use of positive/negative space and man… shades of Hitchcock… love it.

calm down ppl! this is not so original, i’ve already seen a print like that on the net, i think it was a site t-shirts.com or similar, instead of birds were bats and the background was a blue sky, sorry i couldnt find a pic on the net.

Washed mine for the first time yesterday. Washed it inside out in the washing machine, used a non-colourfast setting and the temperature was 30 celsius. Came out fine.

Awesome design. I think it would look great on a snowboard. I don’t know if DBH’s copyright agreement would allow it, but if it does, you should show it to some snowboard companies, such as Burton, Rome, Flow, Ride… to name a few.
Awesome shirt! I just got mine in the mail and it looks great. It’s a little hot though and a little tight; a size L fits tighter than a size M of the same cut (basic fit tee) of a different design, so I’d recommend ordering up a size.

Uhh, I think reprinting your #1 selling shirt would be a good idea.
I’ve got to say I’m not as excited about this shirt as many users seem to be. I ordered it for my girlfriend (since my size was already out of stock) and was utterly dissapointed when the shirt arrived. The print is full of smudges, the shirt looks dirty and it was sticking together when I pulled it out of the envelope. The neck print is already falling in pieces and I’m expecting the same to happen with the actual print in the first wash.
I really wanted to see how DBH was able to print this in a nice way and offer it for it’s customers for a cheap price. I guess I should’ve known the answer.
Seriously, I’d pay twice this amount for the shirt if it was good quality. At the moment the quality is a joke and the sticker (containing excuses and all kinds of bullshit) that was on the shirt really didn’t make the joke any better.

The shirt needs to be washed before you wear it. Must be something about the discharge ink, mine came the same way…all sticking together. As soon as I washed it the fabric was all smooth and it looked incredible! the ink sank right into the shirt and gave it that faded out look. It looks really cool..I’ve bought three of them so far, and they’ve all been great quality and look amazing once washed.

Wash First. It softens the ink and gets rid of that fresh ink stickyness.

I just got this shirt… it was my first DBH purchase. I think that I am now a forever DBH fan.
I’ve been reading the comments about how I should wash it first before wearing it, but really, I’M AFRAID TO! I’m afraid that it’ll bleed or (especially) that the thick ink will crack from the wash/dryer.
So, what do you guys say? Should I wash it by itself? Cold water? What kind of heat setting on the dryer?
I’d really hate to ruin such a nice shirt.
For all those asking about how to wash it, I just followed the instructions printed on it and it turned out fine. Cold wash (I used a gentler cycle, and it was in with a few other clothes), low heat dry. Came out fine for me.
I got mine recently, and I must agree that the print really isn’t as good as I thought it would be. Every other shirt I’ve gotten here has been spot on, but this one has color bleeding through the ink, and fairly large spots where there is no ink from there being wrinkles.
This looks like B-stock quality at best. Neat design, but apparently impractical at this time. Good news is I now have the coolest sleeping shirt in town. :/

Just got this, was disappointed when it came because it was so sticky / worn, but after washing and actually wearing it I got so many compliments. The design is fantastic enough that a little wear doesn’t matter.
Yeah, not too happy with how this one was printed.
It smells of spray paint … yuck.

The shirt looks a million times better after you wash it. The white loses some of it’s brightness, which makes it look a million times better.

Got my shirt a few days ago. Some of the ink had worn off at the seams and was stuck together when I took it out of the packaging, and even after washing it once the inside of the shirt was uncomfortably sticky. It’s still a great shirt, mind you- I wore it over top another shirt to make it comfortable, and I received a ridiculous amount of compliments for the excellent design. Definitely buy it if you like it, and wear it on days when you can deal with a slightly impractical shirt in the name of stylishness.
Just to clarify for folks; The ink is worn off purposely. It’s part of the charm of discharge ink and why I chose it. Discharge is like a high speed version of bleaching a shirt without degrading the fibers.
Each shirt is “worn” a little differently, so no two are alike… mostly…

The discharged ink sort of ruined the T shirt for me. There are a lot of ink marks in white top right portion of the T shirt and makes it look like it was a home stenciled shirt.
The white portion of the t shirt also isn’t as white as in the picture. It is like a darker egg shell white. This makes for less of a contrast.
Don’t expect your t shirt to look exactly like the picture.
I work all day, every week day, 40 hours a week… and come home to see if this has gotten a reprint.
I’m always afraid that when it does finally get reprinted, it’ll be while I’m at work.

Mr. Scary if you’re nasty. It’s a song by Dokken, an instrumental guitar masterpiece of George Lynch’s. Anywho, I’m a landscaper and there’s no computer for me at work… but yes, I do have this exact page as a favorite and click it as soon as I log on. If anything, that explanation was something of a plea in more articulate means.
Ok for all of you who want to know what this shirt is like.. this is the deal.
The design is awesome, not question about that. The shirt itself when you receive it, will be stuck together, like it’s got weak glue on the inside. No way you’re gonna wear it like that..right? So wash it. Then wash it again. Then I washed it again. Still sticky. But f**kt, there was an event on and I wanted to wear my new shirt..damnit. So I did. And it was STILL sticky. In fact, it was so sticky that when I came home and took it off to go shower, there was this sticky residue on parts of me.. and the black tshirt fibres had stuck to the sticky bits. And it wouldn’t come off easily with some soap and water..etc. Took at least 2-3 showers to get that crap off.
Soooo..I washed the shirt again, and once more, just to be sure. And now it’s ok. Still a tiny amount of stickiness, but I’m ok with that. It DOES NOT BREATHE OK, to those who say it does, thats just stupid. The paint clogs up the fabric, and it feels heavy. Small sacrifice for having a cool tshirt? I think so.
Anyway, that is my story. It’s a kickass design, and if you’re willing to run it through the wash serveral times and potentially be sticky and uncomfortable, then get it now..apparently it’s available again.
oh man syke that sucks. Did you contact DBH about it? I hope that’s just a mistake and not on all of these prints. I was really looking forward to getting this. Thanks for that info though.
this is actually my dream shirt… its a long story.. but I’m not sure about it after what syke had to say.. I bought “I love hitchcock” and I had to wash it before I wore it because it was practically glued together.. but it was cool after one washing… that’s what I love about threadless, you can wear it the same day.. but before you wash it, threadless seems a little big.. I’m a threadless fan at heart… designbyhumans is just my alternate.
Btw, I wasn’t trying to discourage anyone from buying the shirt, I’m just letting you know what to be prepared for. I still think it’s a great shirt, it’s just the reality about the type of ink process used.

hrm. sticky eh? i have one on the way. i would assume the sticky is from the adhesive spray they use to keep the shirt stable while the screen prints on it. assuming they print with oversized screens instead of belt printing.

Just got this shirt today along with another DBH shirt. The inside of both the shirts really are sticky right away, but I think that will go away with a washing like others have said here. The design is absolutely awesome and the cotton used in the shirt is very very soft. My opinion: TOTALLY worth it.

For anyone buying this, the white part is what prints, and it does not go to the back. There is only what you see on the front. Very disappointing, they should have printed the black and used a white shirt.
I managed to nab one of the Mediums when this shirt finally came back into stock, very pleased with this – I was, after all, checking this nigh daily.

Lovely shirt, my only problem is, By discharge ink, i was expecting the die to sort of, bleach the colur from the shirt, but it turns out it feels just like the rest of the shirts… A hard plastic-like layer. Discharge prints on other shirts leave it as soft as the fabric. Still, very nice looking shirt.

You should print black ink on a white shirt instead. I know several people who own this shirt and sometimes the white fades and you can see the black behind it, making it lose a lot of its effect.

Just got that one & I’m not impressed at all! After 1 wash, the ink is already cracking – especially on the neck. The print is full of smudges and the shirt looks dirty! Nice design, though!

I just got the shirt. Awesome design, sadly the birds don’t really extend all the way around, I had a slight glimmer of hope. I’m going to say though, that the paint is somewhat a pain, literally. The left sleeve has so much of the paint on it, that it actually sticks to your arm, and rubs on bare skin pretty harshly, this shirt is cool, but is a neucanse to wear.
i own this shirt. the ink is hard and too heavily applied, which makes it quite uncomfortable to wear. the shirt is stiff and unflattering because the cotton is unable to drape correctly on the body. wonderful design, poor execution. i just keep the shirt in my dresser drawer now. :(
after a few washes it doesn’t stick, becomes softer rather than stiff and the design looks good.

I don’t think so, EB – I was told this was a “wholesale order overage return”. Plus, they announced the reprints of Stay on Target during the sale last week.
Maybe go ahead and get a large if you’re considering it.

Just got mine today. I briefly considered sending it back because I thought that the print was off-par for DBH… Till I looked at the model’s pictures more closely and determined that it’s prob the same with all such shirts. Still excellent shirt! :D

Are you talking about the imperfections around the seams / collar areas? It looks that way because of the printing that is needed to be done around the areas of the collar, sleeves, and all the seams.
I think it’s a pretty rad look, myself. Snagged a second copy of this during the recent (but small) restocking. My dog ripped my first one :(

Yeah. The reason I thought it was off-par was that I recently got “Stay On Target” shirt, and it’s pretty much flawless. Maybe it’s because of the difference in the ink or something. Nevertheless, I’m sure that it’ll be awesome after I get it resized down to Medium. :D

Yes I just did the exact same thing.. I’ve got a big line moving diagonally down along the birds, identical to the one on the male model. I can live with it… and if people ask, I’ll just say it’s a strike of lightning XD

i agree with the first comment more reprints of this shirt would get me to buy from this site and also should do prints of shirts thare are being voted on . i mean if u browse them 90 percent look much better than the pic of the weeks shirts. i think they should make copys for every user that desides to buy instead of making itbe vote on for anumber of times. they are loosing money. specialy at the prices these shrits are at during these times.
I would order a mens medium now or asap. Once I tried buying the thing when i saw it in stock M, but it turned out it was a womens size so i had to cancel the order..

I’m completely new to this site, and I made a user just for this shirt! When I first saw it, most sizes including mine were sold out. I decided to check and see if it was reprinted or watever, but apparently its just dead! Why would you not reprint this shirt! don’t you want to make money! I would buy 10 of these this is one of the coolest shirts I have ever seen in my life! I was just wondering, are we EVER going to see a reprint!? im pretty sure this is the only place that you will ever find this shirt on because i believe once submitted the shirts become the property of the website. i really hope they reprint this, recently purchased about 10 other shirts but i would love to get my hands on serveral of this shirt.
I’ve got two plans: one, I’mma check this page very often and snag up some as soon as they become available. I’m also considering getting the design and making a shirt with it on it. There are a few services that let you do this, one is zazzle.com, but it will be really hard to get the full effect since its not just a picture in the middle of a shirt…

Oh and don’t forget that it would be illegal since DBH owns the rights to all artwork they use. So you can either get yourself sued or wait for a reprint like everybody else.

My suggestion is to jump on the political bandwagon. Write your congressman and demand massive reprints of this shirt be part of the next stimulus package. Tell them it can single handedly end the recession and may even help Obama to promote peace thereby warranting his Nobel Peace Prize.
Either that, or start hanging out in the DBH parking lot and start a “Tee Party”

New idea for the reprint! Instead of using discharge ink, why not do it the way Once in a blue moon was created? With white ink. I think the print would look better like that. What do you say shantyshawn? Perhaps this could be a new “rockstar” edition. ;)

With an all-over print like this, using white plastisol would be almost impossible. The ink would bunch up like crazy of the seams and in the armpit areas making the print look really bad.
Darn, that gets my dream trampled. lol. There seems to be little tiny imperfections of the print that I would love to see be corrected next time it is reprinted. Since this is the best selling shirt on DBH, they should spend a day just figuring out how to make it “perfect”.
Hey OolongTee, The “imperfections” are exactly why I chose the discharge ink. It was a way to take the very concept of screen printing the same design on t-shirt after t-shirt and make them “one of a kind”, kinda sorta. i like the “signature series” tees though. Maybe DBH will wanna do that.

yeah, I actually have two prints of “Blackbirds”, and they are definitely distinct from each other. I love the discharge method, as it makes the shirts much softer, lighter, and easily worn, preventing the dreaded “thick, sheet-of-ink” feel to it.
It is my very favorite shirt.

That was probably the original print on the DBH Original blank. They might have adjusted the print slightly when they went to reprint it.

Yes, but you forget about one thing: I piss on copyright laws! At the same time, I would never violate THIS copyright cause its just so damn awesome and the author is a pretty cool guy. I wouldn’t use zazzle anyway cause I don’t think I would get the full design, just a square. I wonder if there’s a a site where I can apply a design to a whole shirt… and maybe I could get the author’s permission or something and pay him like $10 or something. But anyway, yea I’ll just wait for a reprint; everything else is impractical.

Why don’t you draw your own Mattj7? I saw one design that inspired me to recreate it with my own style and it’s then free of copyright. It’s not for DBH subbing, but for myself.
