Shrunken Heads

Shrunken heads, also called tsantsas, were sort of trophies made with the severed heads of enemies. The process was supposed to keep the soul inside the head. They were made by removing the skull, sewing the eyelids and mouth shut, boiling the head in a mix of water and special herbs, and then drying and molding it on hot rocks and sand. The skin was then rubbed down with charcoal ash and decorated with beads.
