@PaulSoFresh: Thank you I have really enjoyed your very original works. It was a pity that your reject

PaulSoFresh PaulSoFresh Human from IL, United States

@KnightSky #wotto stated “WB made a decision to only offer a logo because they wanted artists to provide their own interpretation of the characters. If they wanted photo manipulated WB owned images they could have done that without teaming up with DBH”. I feel that DBH/WB has been dishonest to the ‘true’ design community/fan base, because they let people submit copyright material. It’s so unfair to all the designers and fans that put in weeks and days of work into their orginal pieces – only to get rejected for no clear reason. If anybody has violated the rules and regulations – it’s DBH/WB for allowing copycats to submit their work and get approved! WB should just have said use ‘our stock’ and ‘copyright’ material in your designs to get accepted!!!!?? I’m just saying…

@Salvisan – Thanks :)

@KnightSky – Good luck on your submission.

JustPetrucci JustPetrucci Artist from Washington, United States

@ 5cents: I would bet 10 to 1 it’s because they’re kissing. Warner Bros. sure is putting the hammer down (Which is apparently a sledge hammer) on designs that portray Catwoman in any even remotely provocative way. I think their thoughts on it is because of how many younger Batman fans there are. But it’s a pretty legit design. I’m pretty sure there IS no picture of those two kissing (yet?) so we know it’s original!

@ shawkash: Yeah, and you didn’t just filter, you actually DREW it. But my guess would be, ironically, that you drew it too well; the actors are too recognizable. (But as actors, not as characters.) There’s some weird law/rule about using likenesses of people. Don’t get your head down though, that’s a pretty good drawing!

@ Salvisan: Because it’s Catwoman.
...actually, I don’t know. It probably HAS something to do with her though. If I were to GUESS, I would say they thought her boob was too big. If you took that out and resubmit (If you just got a rejection and you can find out that it’s a minor change, you have 24hrs to fix and resubmit!) you might be golden.

@ vagelisd: That’s nice! Did you use a 3D program to make Batman?? That’s awesome.

@ CorLeonis: You can get the details if you email them via the address that was in the rejection email. (It should be: If it’s a minor change, you have 24hrs to revise it. But you may have been rejected for replicating too many movie stills. :P

@ PaulSoFresh: It’s Catwoman. They likely didn’t like her pose or that her shirt was zipped so low. (Despite the strategically placed buckle…)

@ dw316: Most likely because your Bane looks too much like the movie photo and your background image looks like it may be a photograph as well. (If it’s YOUR photo in the background, then that’s fine. I would suggest altering it though so it doesn’t look stolen. But if you just got it off of google or someplace, you’re not supposed to use it.)

@ grantdarrah: If it was rejected by DBH, the probable reason is because it was not a big and crazy enough design. The other logo tees that got through to voting went crazy. So, in short: Your first one was probably fine, it just needed more.

@ KnightSky: Not only that, he stole MY design name!! :O
But also @ PaulSoFresh don’t you guys fret. DBH and WB have been removing things from the voting wall because of copyright infringement. So even though they put them through to voting, they’re still going back and checking. (Or getting emails from people reporting them) I’ve noticed ones going missing here and there and my own two keep jumping around on the pages they’re on! So don’t get too jacked out of your drawers until the dust settles… ;)

@JustPetrucci – Thanks for the insight.

wotto wotto Staff: Creative Director from CA, United States

Hi Paul,
I think you may have misunderstood the rules of copyright here. Most of those designs you listed have used images but they have redrawn the design and made it their own. Every one of those artists could argue that they referenced the images and we can’t argue with that. Copyright is a complex thing and with a legal team on hand throughout the contest we have had to adhere to the guidelines set out.
I think DBH and WB have handled this contest very professionally and we have followed the guidelines very closely. I have sent hundreds of emails explaining why designs have been rejected and I pride myself on educating artists and not flat out rejecting them.
I emailed you during the submission period and offered advice so let’s take a look at your piece and give you some feedback. Your design is well drawn and I personally like it BUT it doesn’t represent the movie or characters as they appear in the movie. Catwoman is a hard character to interpret because while it is open to interpretation we still need the character to look like the movie version. I hope this helps you to understand the reasons for rejection and I hope to see your submissions in future contests.

@JustPetrucci – I do get frustrated (I think I speak for others too) when original work gets rejected and you see more and more rip offs get the vote.

wotto wotto Staff: Creative Director from CA, United States

We are removing all rip off designs when we are notified. We cannot be expected to know every single Batman drawing on the internet and the community here have been amazing at spotting and reporting them. It’s a sad situation but one we are working on everyday. Thanks those who identify stuff and make my job easier.

KnightSky KnightSky Artist from Ontario, Canada

@wotto I’m assuming that because my comment got taken down that either I said something bad or the t-shirt I referenced was taken off… If I said something inappropriate I apologize and if the t-shirt I referenced got taken down… thank you lol

PaulSoFresh PaulSoFresh Human from IL, United States

@wotto –

The rules as stated:

#2. Interpretations of The Dark Knight Rises versions of Batman, Catwoman, Bane and other Batman elements are allowed.

Below are example that have been accepted into your contest:

Please explain how these images represent the movie; that is not currently yet released. You stated “we still need the character to look like the movie version” – please clarify this for me and rest of the community who have questions of similar nature…

What I’m hearing is that using official stock imagery makes the graphic/concept more appealing to WB because it feels more like the movie. WB should just have said use ‘our stock’ and ‘copyright’ material in your designs to get accepted!!!!??

Candyrock Candyrock Human from United States

@Woot Is is true that your have 24hours to resubmit minor changes if you have just received a rejection letter?

Salvisan Salvisan Human from Spain

@Wotto: This is my interpretation of Catwoman I took faithful to the film references I don´t understand because its rejection, will be everyone believes that it is very good

wotto wotto Staff: Creative Director from CA, United States

@ KnightSky – I removed the design. Thanks.

@PaulSoFresh – Contests like this always throw up surprises and these designs show an awful lot of creativity.
1. A reference to batman history and homage to Batman’s roots while still staying true to the character – WB liked it.
2. These characters do represent the movie characters but as caricatures and they are very well represented. This design is also very funny and WB do have a sense of humour.
3. Represents Catwoman as a female human being with a mask. Simple but it’s definitely more representative of Catwoman than other designs we have received.

We want people who are trying to draw realistic versions of the characters to stay true to their ‘look’ and we want people who are having fun being super creative to bring something different. I don’t think it’s fair of you to keep dragging other peoples art into this discussion. The community do not want their art scrutinized after it has been approved. Decisions are final.
I have explained the copyright situation to you twice before so I am unsure why the question is repeated.

@PaulSoFresh way to make friends by bad mouthing other artists work. Wotto answered you, let it go.

vagelisd vagelisd Human from Greece

JustPetrucci thank you! yes i use 3D studio max to create BATMAN!
At the back Gotham fall (ashes), at the front Batman go up (Rise)

PaulSoFresh PaulSoFresh Human from IL, United States

@mr_potatohead – My intentions are not to ‘bad mouth’ other artists – buddy. I’m just making my points heard… done.

PaulSoFresh PaulSoFresh Human from IL, United States

@wotto – Glad you could clarify through this post, because I wasn’t getting the answers through email. I don’t want to drag this out any further and wish to participate in future events. As far as copyright goes – that’s a subject best left for the lawyers… I know the definition, I don’t need further explanation.

Good luck to all the designers who submitted original work and got approved.

JustPetrucci JustPetrucci Artist from Washington, United States

@ vagelisd: DANG! I wish I had a 3D program! I used to use Maya all the time at school, but alas! It’s like $3000! :P
Maybe I can dig up some old 3D models from school days and make them into designs for the Daily, cuz that’s a great idea…

lamborghini lamborghini Artist from United States

@wotto- If I haven’t received a rejection by now, is it safe to relax and assume it’s been approved?
