hi! i think my favourite way is to redraw all the lines in photoshop in a huge resolution so that they look almost smooth and then bring them to illustrator and trace them with the live trace tool. the tool will eliminate any rougher edges and also give the lines various widths which is usually a good thing :) but there are many ways how to trace a picture and each situation asks for a different solution. good luck!
dagnis Jun 02, 2008
ideally 20” wide by 24” long by 300 dpi, that would be 6000×7200 pixels if you work in photoshop :) but i guess they must be used seeing people send in smaller files than that since i can’t imagine everybody working at those resolutions
dagnis Jun 02, 2008
:) (1) pen tool, takes a bit of learning to master, (2) brush, just make the sensitivity of your mouse very slow and draw extremely carefully, (3) draw a straight or whatever cornered line and add the curves through filter > liquefy. when tracing photos you should either do (2) in photoshop, don’t care that the lines look a bit ugly, then bring them to illustrator and auto-trace them. that will make them smoother and better looking. other solution would be to start working with the pen tool from the beginning. i suggest doing that in illustrator then, not photoshop.

no problems. hope to see some designs soon. :)
dagnis Jun 03, 2008
sure, if you wish, i can take a look :)
dagnis Jun 03, 2008
you can find my e-mail in my profile page. send it there.

hey! just received your drawing. i think it’s a great sketch. designs like that are very hot right now. of course, it’s still a sketch and it should be finished of nicely to be a quality work but as a sketch it really works and i can already see it on a tee. if you want to get better, i think it’s worth doing this same exercise again for several times and then choose the best of the outcomes. as many times as you can. the only difference between a professional graphics artist and a beginner often is that the pro knows why it’s worth to be patient. i’m still trying to teach that to myself, too. good luck! :)
dagnis Jun 03, 2008
it’s cool. i’m in a talking mood today :)
dagnis Jun 03, 2008
nop, the big life sucked me in before i managed to graduate, i’ve been working for the past 3 years and still do so. hope to return to school someday :)
dagnis Jun 04, 2008
i mean back to university, of course :) studied sociology. now looking more towards the visual communications
dagnis Jun 05, 2008
pretty much graphic design, yes
dagnis Jun 05, 2008
i change my working habits a lot. when you produce many works you have to otherwise you’ll be just repeating yourself. so i sometimes use photoshop sometimes illustrator. sometimes even both on one project. sometimes i sketch on a paper, sometimes i just have a clear idea in my head, and sometimes i don’t have a clue what am i going to make. whatever gets something done is good
dagnis Jun 05, 2008
and thanks for the interest, haha :)
dagnis Jun 07, 2008
illustrator takes practice but the spent time on learning it is well worth it. in most cases you can speed up your work flow 10 times when work with illustrator
dagnis Jun 11, 2008
it’s definitely something to do with the color profiles you use in photoshop and your monitor color settings. it’s a common problem when something’s been set wrong.
dagnis Jun 17, 2008
cool to hear. don’t spend too much time at the pc on the summer, tho, haha
dagnis Jun 17, 2008
haven’t paid enough attention yet! so i can’t tell
dagnis Jun 18, 2008
i think they would be very stoked if you entered as many designs as you can pull of, gives more to choose from :)
dagnis Jun 18, 2008
a ton of ideas is the only correct way to work, i think :)
dagnis Jun 18, 2008
haha! work as usual mostly. although, just signed up for a master class at beach volleyball with a world known trainer from florida. so hoping for the summer to kick in more in the next few weeks when the class goes on
dagnis Jun 26, 2008
the trainer is carlos cartaya :) he’s apparently the trainer of the spanish olympic silver medalist team. as far as i checked he was hot himself during the 80’s and early 90’s. trainings start next week, can’t wait. as for saving the thumbnail, i imagine you do that via ‘save as…’ function in photoshop/illustrator to get heavy files. well, that’s wrong in this case. use the "save for web…" function instead, it will give you plenty of controls how to reduce the file size of the image. good luck!
dagnis Jun 29, 2008
haha, yeah, it took some money but i’m sure it’s gonna be worth it. :) i used to play volleyball seriously when i was 12 to 18 and then after a serious thumb injury didn’t touch the ball for 5 years until this summer. so this is kinda chance to get the good old times back and you can’t value that in money, haha :) great start by the way, love the monster design. just one advise – put the placement picture as the first image, people often don’t look at the second image, you’ll surely get more votes that way
dagnis Jun 29, 2008
hit the thumb out of it’s position during a match so that it was hanging loosely at the lower part of the palm :) it healed in time so it wasn’t that bad :)
dagnis Aug 02, 2008
nop, didn’t buy a thing. still have 300 spare DBH credits left but since i already have more dbh shirts (have won 1000 dbh dollars in total) than i can wear, and since all my closest friends have had their shirts, too, i’m kinda out of ideas where to spend the rest :) so i’m holding on my credits for now, otherwise i’ll need to look for a bigger appartment for my t-shirt collection :) haha! how about you? got something?
dagnis Aug 03, 2008
yeah, i’ve been waiting for that shirt for ages :)
myargie22 Aug 03, 2008

Incarnadine Aug 19, 2008
haha I’m actually wearing that shirt right now! Yeah, it’s totally hand drawn, no use of the text tool in PS or anything!
Incarnadine Aug 20, 2008
I dunno, there are so many amazing entries already, and I’m doing something for a client right now too, so it’s not the best time unfortunately. It will be interesting to see who wins!
Incarnadine Aug 20, 2008
Thanks! I dunno what to do with that one. Maybe I’ll throw it up on here? Don’t know how well it’d do though.

the trainer was more I had hoped for. i had signed for two weeks and when they were over, signed for another two weeks. i was really good to get back to something that i had loved so much a while ago, it definitely made my summer and I learned a lot, too. i’m hoping to see him again on spring at the canary islands, i’m addicted now
