"Hello Mr. Wayne" in the making...
SPYKEEE Artist Interview
Q: Your design is very detailed and in areas becomes abstracted, was that an intentional feel you were going for?
A: The feel that I was after for this was something to represent the Batman trilogy movies. The movies that Christopher Nolan made were very dark and gritty, so I wanted to apply that feel to the illustration. Growing up I was a real big fan of the comics and I really liked it when they portrayed batman to be a more dark and intense character.
Q: You used a very limited color palette for this design which gives the design a very unique feel, did you set out with just one color or did you intend on using more?
A: I planned the color palette before I did the illustration. I was after a illustration that has muted tones and very heavy shadows.
Q: You have a unique style of drawing; did you have to alter that slightly to represent the characters of the movie?
A: Actually when I did this design everything just fell into place. When I heard about the contest, I was able to come up with a concept right away. And being influenced heavily by comics, I was able to use the concepts and techniques that I picked up drawing comic book characters.
Q: What were your main influences for this piece of art?
A: The major influence would be the Batman comics and the Dark Knight movies.
Q: Can you tell us how you work on a design like this, what is your process?
A:
The first thing I do before taking on the illustration is to plan out a concept inside my head. Taking mental notes on the structure and composition of the image and especially the colors that I'm going to use.
After visualizing my design, I do a rough sketch on Paint tool SAI. I usually don't do my sketching on paper anymore because it would take up time scanning the artwork. For me going purely digital is more convenient and it saves trees.
After finalizing my sketch and having already decided on a final composition for the design, I go to Photoshop and do my rendering there. First I would do the flats, which works for me because it helps you render the subject without overlapping the colors into other layers. Also I make sure that my flats would fall into the lines.
After coloring in the flats, I go in and play around with the lighting. After finalizing the light source, I do the shadows. I make sure that the shadows fall into place and check if no lighting is off or out of place. After shadows comes the highlights and mid-tones.
After blocking in all the shadows and highlights, I work on the details. Then After rendering the main subjects, I would take on the background. Making sure that the background will help direct the eye of the viewer to the main subject.
Lastly, I would check on minor details and check on the overall appearance of the piece to make sure everything looks good.
Q: Will you be wearing your design when you go and see the movie?
A: If it arrives here in the Philippines just in time for the movie, yes of course.
Q: You have a strong set of followers here at DBH, how do you go about promoting your self as an artist?
A: Usually, I promote on Facebook and through word of mouth. I also asked my friends to share and spread my designs in the internet, especially on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter.
Q: Which other design in the contest caught your eye and you felt was maybe your fiercest competitor?
A: A lot of artists were really good and they submitted really great designs. There were a number of artists that I felt were was going to win the contest like Nicebleed, Mathiole, Collisiontheory and Ohdoyle.
Q: What do you plan on doing with your winnings?
A: Part of it will go into the bank, and a part of it will be spent on art stuff or things that I need to polish my drawing skills like a new laptop, books and a better graphic tablet. The other part will be for expenses and some of it will be for fun. A vacation also sounds nice.
Q: Finally, If you got the chance to design for Warner Bros. again, which of the Batman characters would you most like to create a design for?
A: I think I would do joker, I want to apply the insanity and craziness of the joker in to something visual.

Didnt actually see this on voting, so totally out of left field. Cool man, love the sketch, nice hand detail, that is a little lost later in the blackness. Like the fact that there are no colours, more subtle cream and black.
Congratulations to you sir! Beautifully rendered art and a very well deserved win!

Agreed with MrFourFingers..its kinda lost the details on BANE pants and there’s no enough blackness.
