To the ones that say “Awesome design +1, Please check out my design” and copy/paste it on every entry,
I notice who you are, and this behavior, although it might help you get votes, it is actually counter productive when the DBH Staff and I have to make a decision on what to print.
Just sayin, “Oh, that’s that guy who spams on everyone’s design…” doesn’t really help to put you in good light.
Having been an artist myself on the site, and still participating from time to time, I totally despise spamming comments. I will be ruthlessly vocal in rejecting a design when it comes down to choosing a design between a legitimate vote getter versus a spammer.

Well the good thing is that it doesn’t really help anyone get printed. So it’s not truly a popularity contest even though new people tend to think it is.

I agree. I just think that the more it continues, the more people will think its commonplace and do it more and more. And like Jimiyo said in the original post, it just makes their job more difficult.
I’d be willing to bet that a majority of the shirts with 125+ votes are getting at least half of those from family and friends who will never come to the site again or ever buy a shirt…
so votes doesn’t really affect that much? other guys have hundreds of friends over social networks and signs up here just to vote and leave. Good thing that this site is not just based on votes and doesn’t rely on popularity. I still believe that only those who make artworks and has the love for designing have the right to vote here, “yeah you’ve got friends and they like your work so not to disappoint you.” Thanks to Jimiyo, I still believe what you can do about this growing popularity contest, maybe designs are much better judged by guys like you not by voters who doesn’t really care about what we are doing here. Thanks man.
well as this site gains more and more popularity, i believe that the voting will become useless. i know that it’s there to get an idea of what the ‘people’ are interested in wearing, but being here only a month, i can already see how people abuse it.
I have only been a member for only days and it is quite apperant this happens. There is one person I have seen on almost everyones comments saying hey are you the one that likes my type of artwork then come check it out and vote. It gets old!
So out of my excitement for participating in the 10K contest I ended up unintentionally spamming the DBH company…because i thought… Why not send a message…maybe someone hasn’t seen it and they will really like it?!(I mean I don’ know)… I only ask my “friends” to vote for my designs and somehow thought just sending it along to DBH staff wouldn’t be a problem. duhh…i was in a goofy mood.
Well, this is NOT a “smooth move” as I was informed…so I promptly felt like a ding dong idiot and apologized…

I thought spammers was an effort to oppose the domination jimiyo, a mar illo and who won and that felt established with the form and always got appreciation. i think spammers might?. why not? then also that determined one design won or was not just staff DBH know. i think not staff stupid to choose design… but also one design won only was not determined by how many vote. was still appreciating them who tried to pull vote. if not this competition for only a popularity and just jimiyo, alia dotony, an mar illo always get many appreciation. I supportive spammaers why not… :)

I just have no idea what you were trying to say.
I spammed when i first came on here, as far as family and friends go, they probably would make up less than 5 votes of each of my designs. I try not to involve them. I’d rather have 60 votes from the public on my design than 100+ knowing that heaps were made up of friends and family. They are biased voters haha.

yeah i agree im fairly new myself but since ive been here (which is only been two months) its been spam central. its very annoying but i guess its up to da folkz that knw spamming on here is bad to let da new folks knw its is bad as well. which can b a daunting tasks due to the amount of new traffic coming through.
It is very difficult to speak of spam, I think many have done … I did, I think respect is what leads us to live together in peace … I promise to stop. But with all due respect we deserve … thanks ddeti

Don’t worry about posting a link. Your design will be seen by the people who matte (DBH), and if it’s really good it will get a decent amount of votes too. The votes feel good, but they’re not the be all end all, so don’t sweat it or worry about it too much. Do your best on the art and the rest will take care of itself.

I’m doing maybe 3 or so critiques a day so no, not spam. It’s just a reference link ;)

it doesnt matter how much or how little you do it, if it is not related to what you post it is spam. plain and simple. there are no shades of grey in this one.
they could click on your avitar if they wanted to see the tallent of the one giving them a critique…That’s usually what I do.
Yep I agree I hate spamming too, This has been a great topic and has made me chuckle with delight ;) Its very hard when your a new comer to the community and it takes a while to get noticed, I’m still working on it, you just gotta keep positive and fair and work hard! Good Luck everyone.
what I call spam is this oddball guy who I am deleting everytime who keeps asking questions – you all know who I mean? but otherwise, it takes a LONG time to sift through the links and vote, I do that in leisure time – but if someone doesn’t stop by or “spam” me – I won’t see what they have.

Why won’t you see? They’ll be in the first few vote pages.

because there are 75 or so pages worth of subs, the first few people tend to look at and then they get bored, tired, busy whatever- and quit looking. Those are the non members, perhaps or old timer’s like you ;-) There’s also the fact, I don’t have time to look every single day. If somebody checks out a page, comments and sends a link, requesting a view of theirs – how is that spam? Unless they are doing that on the same person’s page repeatedly? That is in essence, what spam is – “unwanted repetitive mail”.
My own email confirmation from an accepted sub from DBH says such words as “shameless promotion” – and “tell your friends/family” — then when a person gets friends or family, etc to vote for them half the time they’re accused of having illegitimate votes or ppl say it’s not a popularity contest, etc..
Rather contrary don’t you think?
Every person who comes onto this page is also a potential consumer – , and aside from this forum – I’ve seen derogatory remarks flying around like a realllll group of professional designers for joe public to view w/o signing in. (note: yes that is sarcasm) I personally wouldn’t buy a shirt from somebody if I saw they were posting nasty attitudes all over the place regardless of how fabulous it looks, I’m not going to support a jerk.
Design your shirts with luv or artistic angst, not nasty bad ’tudes. :p

If someone is going onto every SINGLE member’s page, I could consider that spam but if the person is browsing, voting, etc – wtf is the problem? If YOU don’t like it – then delete their comment.

wtf is my problem? well it gets through my email, that’s what. You can see in my status that i do no like spam messages. Maybe you should read every argument in this post, and see my sentiments along with the others. -michelle

I filter my email (its an option in your profile) so I don’t get every single remark, that includes all of the forum posts I make. Simple as that.
I’ve read quite a few of the threads on this particular topic already and will just stand by what I said to Stray and say it to you. How is it spam? Is it one single person, singling YOU out and repeatedly posting to you – to go check out their design? Aside from this OP that is, is that actually happening to you?
I would concur with you if it’s the same person over and over with the same link – but I stopped at your page a priori and didn’t see that. Several people did the “vote for me if you like” routine – but again, how is THAT, in particularly – spam?
(I am not talking about this one person the OP was talking about in particular )

so yeah may be its not spam when you want to get noticed by people…and trying for people to take a look at your design…that’s not spam…to comment on their design after voting and asking them for their support, that’s not spam…SPAM is as I read a few posts above repetitive email messaging that has nothing to do with the work on the webpage…so that is.
The newest subs are added to the first page of voting, usually between 8 and 25 designs per day, right? There are 40 design per page. So even if you miss a day or two, you are still only going to have to look at the first (or possibly first AND second page) to see what you missed. Tough cookies.
I get that oldest subs are in the last pages, and there are currently 71 pages of designs to vote on. But the longer you have been a member of DBH, the more designs you will have seen soon after they were accepted for voting. Thus, you’ll have gotten acquainted with voting page #38 or #56 or #27, and don’t have to go looking through all those pages to vote on designs. Remember, there are thousands of other members on here, from all different time zones, checking for new subs all the time. Your vote isn’t the only one that counts. Don’t worry if you missed a few.
Personally, I hate spamming, and probably won’t vote on your design if you’re going around asking ppl for votes, even if I DO like it. Someone has probably voted for you JUST because you asked, and that can count as my vote. Besides, where’s your pride? Can’t you see that asking ppl for votes is not the same as receiving a vote because your design was good enough to warrant it?
Bottom line is that Jimiyo and DBH have said that it is something that they wish you would not do. So because of that………just don’t do it. It really is that simple.

I honestly think this happens way too much now-a-days. Everybody gets their local friends and family to come to the site and vote for them, but I can bet 90% of the time that’s all they do. Its started to turn this site into a popularity contest.
