Dear Spammers
To the ones that say “Awesome design +1, Please check out my design” and copy/paste it on every entry,
I notice who you are, and this behavior, although it might help you get votes, it is actually counter productive when the DBH Staff and I have to make a decision on what to print.
Just sayin, “Oh, that’s that guy who spams on everyone’s design…” doesn’t really help to put you in good light.
Having been an artist myself on the site, and still participating from time to time, I totally despise spamming comments. I will be ruthlessly vocal in rejecting a design when it comes down to choosing a design between a legitimate vote getter versus a spammer.
Cheers!

I wish I knew what DBH was like before this dark period. It is difficult to see a particularly awful design get supported because the commenter expects something in return. Is it not obvious how corrupt a spammer is when he dimwittedly posts the same sentence fragment and hyperlink in different designs by the same creator? It defeats the purpose of Design by Humans. I do not see how it is possible to win without greasing a few wheels to get your promotion in motion because of the current structure of voting. I do not merely think that this is an inconvenience, but it warrants an overhaul of the voting system. I do not mean to seem abrasive, but I feel that I need to say these things. As of now, it seems like hyperlinks and spammers alike have to be banned because of the same reason that trusts and pools were outlawed in American enterprise. What to do? Please, help me to understand the situation better.
Respiro said: When I comment with an “Awesome” or “Love it” [and so on…] I do NOT spam! I mean it.
Basically, there is NO way to difference a non-spam from a spam so, in my opinion, DBH should NOT accuse us by spam.
Deal?…
If you add a “Check out mine” comment after that it is spam. If you love a design express so, let your designs get votes by their own merits.
I read this and felt extremely embarrassed, i will stop tastelessly trying to promote my design (but as was already voiced in this forum i thought that was just how one was supposed to garner votes on this site) I hope anyone that was the victim of my spam will forgive me.

Was your design deleted? Because I don’t see that you have any.
The short story is that me and my friend colaborated with me doing the lines and him doing the colors, so our design was posted on m3rKuRiaL ‘s profile. It was me who was doing the lion’s share of shameless spaming- since I glanced at our work today only to see it wallowing in anatomy.

Yeah, I noticed that to… :/
Shoot ok I’ll stop from now on, but then it’s ok to say “I love it” if you actually love the design, I think there’s nothing wrong with that as long as there’s not a promotional message.
This is good to know.
I actually thought this (the “spamming”) is how this site rolls, sorry, but I only recently joined for the Kings Of Leon Contest. And to a newbie like me the spamming came across as the standard.
I may have participated as far as in posting a link to my design, but I always took the time to phrase an individual comment and I only vote for and comment on works I appreciate.
I agree!!…it makes me even vote for the sake of repaying them :( not because of the quality… another comment I don’t like is something like “nice design! voted. comment and vote too”… tsk3!!

On every single entry on the first page. They know it’s wrong, but think they can get away with it, or nobody will notice.I didn’t notice this at first, but this one is worse than others.
As soon as you click that link, you VOTE.
If you want to or not.
Holy crap.
When I put a link is to my pics in Flickr (using their html share) so people can see other options or close ups. otherwise I really talk to people about what they did or to thank them for a constructive or nice comment…. Mostly I vote for other designs without even leaving a comment…. but some times I live a bit “nice” or “wow” or the +1 because it seems to be a habit to say that we vote… maybe there I can get seen as a spammer? So I guess I will make more attention to that.
Fabiofranca, as far as I know a spammer (in this community) is someone who says the same repetitive comment on a lot of designs just so people notice him and his designs. It’s often accompanied with the URL of the spammer’s design, and he writes the comment regardless of what design it actually is, jhe just wants to put it everywhere (spam).
Talking to people, constructive comments and encouragement is good! Keep doing it! What’s bad is not actually meaning the encouragement and just doing it so people vote for you.
This tread really deserves to be on the front page. So many copy/paste messages are popping up again.
wow i didnt know there are so many kind of spam, there is a guy who email me over and over and wants me to send him my designs so he can print them for himself ,usually i dont lose my temper and i dont mind of normal spams(please vote for my design!) ,but this one is very odd , i guess i better delete my email from my profile
we need a tattle button like one the other site has, can we get rid of these fools.
Well said jimiyo. When I first joined the site I did a lot of self advertising only because I didn’t know better. I saw other people do it so much I just figured that’s how the site ran. Then I was given some words of wisdom from cbass99. Like most of you I check out all the designs everyday, 10 times a day. There is no need to go around pasting links around the site. If people see your design and the genuinely like it, they will vote.

I get furious about this spamming. argggg.Respiro said: When I comment with an “Awesome” or “Love it” [and so on…] I do NOT spam! I mean it.

hi humans!
just came out the shower and had an Idea… again for a feature…
that could help newbies that start spamming all over the place understand how the system works..
my idea would be:
inform the people right at the place where they start spamming:
as soon as someone starts typing something like a link you could blend in a message that informs the people about the spamming issue or link to this “Dear Spammers” Thread of jimiyo.
I was not aware of this problem until now.
I have been guilty of doing said this on a few posts recently, but I have not spammed every design in the running. I will refrain from it in future.
I believe “This Post” must be always on the top of the forum,so others , Specially newbies will read easily,.. This was really helped me to get rid of bad thing that i did 3 months ago ,,,,
Cheers :)
Sighs with relief
DBH is not the only site that has this problem, but I am glad that this issue is discussed here because in some sites, no one gives a damn, or that the owner often feels too powerless to control his own members; some other sites even encourage that kind of “self-promotion”. I often feel bad when someone comes in and says, “Hey, I like your stuff! Voted! Come over to mine and see if you like it.” I feel like I owe them something and though I am often eager to do them that favor, I cannot find myself to gag and click on the vote button when the designs are just … er … not worth it? … Sorry guys, to those who voted for me with that kind of expectation, I mean no offense. I am only being truthful.
I miss the days of people just saying nice things and critiquing each other’s work without running into a “ZOMG!!! So AmAzIng!?#@! you shouldz def check out my shirt! It rulez your mother in bed!! lolz. But seriously, please take a look at my fine work of art and vote for it so I can win money” post.
Oh spammers.
It is also kind of annoying to see people promoting their own shirt in these forums. I can understand posting unfinished work to gather critique, but posting a bulletin to say “Vote for my shirt” isn’t very cool. There are places to do that. Other artistic and social avenues are a great place for that, but not in this community.
Let your art speak for itself on here.
/sigh
You do have to realize a lot of these people are just trying to pool support for their shirt, because it is a very competitive website. I certain that most mean nothing more than that.
Having said that, I find it embarrassing to post something like “cool design, now check out mine because you are obligated to because I voted for yours”.
Im glad we have a forum now to discuss these things.
Now vote on… just kidding.

Of course that’s why their doing it, what other reason would there be? One guy posted several topics here in the forum about the same shirt, and by the looks of it he doesn’t take the time to read anything else on the forum, or even followup on his own topics. Just “HEY CHECK OUT MY SHIRT AND VOTE” and he’s gone.
Being new here I have noticed this quite a lot. I was even tempted to do it myself. I only vote on designs I actually LIKE, and I would never beg for votes.
Funny, I thought it wasn’t as looked down upon here because on threadless they always rip people to shreds when they to that. People seem to more ignore it here. I don’t personally do it because I think its counter-productive to actual community building. I’m glad you’re putting it out there that its bad practice.
People, people – I have an idea for the site! It’s a little complicated though, so here goes…
Under the voting section, there would be a new method of viewing the t-shirts, and this would be primary way of viewing t-shirt entries. You have to confirm entering this ‘mode’, and also confirm exiting.
It would be set up as follows: there is a bar along the bottom showing 5 T shirts. When you click a shirt from the thumbnail, it loads fully above the bar. The next batch of shirts would be chosen by being THE LEAST VIEWED!! That’s the important part.
Inner workings:
When you confirm the entrance and exit of viewing the shirts, you know that all the shirts have definitely viewed, at least by the thumbnail. Having only 5 viewed at a time ensures the voter is concentrating on a smaller number leading to a more accurate popularity showing. Also, bandwidth for DBH is saved by only loading a small number of images. Therefore, some of the saved bandwidth can be used to preload the next batch of T shirts, meaning that voters are not hanging around waiting for pics to load. Maybe use a timer to ensure that voters do not move to quickly through the Ts?
By having the least viewed shown, it levels the playing field across all the T shirts. This discourages spammers, as if they do spam they do not get the advantage as their shirt is viewed less in this viewing mode.
The winners would be chosen as follows:
-Having at least a certain number of views
-Having a high vote-to-view ratio (as close to 1 as possible)
-And of course any other method of selecting winners as you do now

Used MS paint; I’m not an artist – it’s just to give a general jist of the idea.

Yeah, I’m not trying to knock Threadless, but I think there’s a little more tact here at DBH. We generally just ignore what we don’t like instead of forming a mob, haha. Unless it’s theft, we’ll get the torches and pitchforks out for that.

All that to curb spamming? Is it worth it, haha. Let the spammers dig their own graves, all’s well that ends well.
You know what makes me sad? It’s when a bunch of spammers don’t know that they’re spamming and other people defend them thinking,“(They) don’t deserve to be treated that way!”

Well… it has it’s other advantages as well… spam curbing was just one
To each their own I guess, I like the way it works now. That way sounds like a turn off to me.
Meh. It’s only an concept to be thrown in to pool of ideas. Maybe a more simple solution would be to have an option for showing the least viewed; everyone wins that way – you can view it how you like.
EDIT: it wouldn’t stop spamming, but it might deter people slightly – and it makes the T shirt viewing more balanced.

this designer is getting vote from spam, he spammed me, so I investigated. every comment on his post after the 17th one is from spam he left. very unfair.
I’m new to this site and I’m glad I read this since I have seen people spamming and it seemed as though it was ok to do this here. It’s only my second day here so now I know early on. Good and informative post that all newbies should see!
Just an idea to help out people their first week here: Maybe there can be a thread for the newbies to post their first designs and get acquainted with each other. Just a thought.
And yes spamming is annoying, but I wish that sometimes people could post more kindly to other members who make mistakes, especially when they are new. Sometimes I read some harsh reactions from other members.
Well that was my 2 cents:)
There’s no point for newbies to post their first designs in one thread. They’re submitted and seen like any other design on the voting pages. Don’t worry, people will see it.
Well, I do spam before and I do it for campaign for my artwork, forgive me to all if i didn’t know this thread before and now i will follow your rules DBH :). thanks for the thread J :).
When i let go of an artwork here it speaks for itself. No longer i do the talking. It has its own personality and it attracts people because of what it is. I’m happy that people do add some votes from time to time. I take time to check out the works of those who leave a comment on my page and try to learn from them. So i only get to spam my mind with their works.
hey guys wanna ask u something, my art got submited and up for voting, but i can’t see it yet on the voting page….does it take time to actually get into the voting page or is it a glitch or something?
oh yes, this i ask because i don’t like doing spam, so brute and honestly viel…….yeahhhh

Thanks for bringing this up, jimiyo. It is really annoying and I can imagine even more annoying for you guys who have to actually look and decide on the designs.
