Dear Spammers
To the ones that say “Awesome design +1, Please check out my design” and copy/paste it on every entry,
I notice who you are, and this behavior, although it might help you get votes, it is actually counter productive when the DBH Staff and I have to make a decision on what to print.
Just sayin, “Oh, that’s that guy who spams on everyone’s design…” doesn’t really help to put you in good light.
Having been an artist myself on the site, and still participating from time to time, I totally despise spamming comments. I will be ruthlessly vocal in rejecting a design when it comes down to choosing a design between a legitimate vote getter versus a spammer.
Cheers!

Okay… I JUST read this, and am TOTALLY guilty (as if you didn’t know.)
‘Green Tara’ may have been my first submission, but I’ve been lurking and voting for several months. Prior to my recent promotional spam-spree, I was picking only those designs that I would personally wear. (I guess that should be the determining factor in voting, right… would you or perhaps your significant other wear it?) But only one of my ‘legitimate’ picks was ever chosen as a winner, and that just recently. In my opinion, there are MANY spectacular designs that simply don’t get printed. I’ve watched them come and, unfortunately, go. Conversely, there are a good many somewhat mediocre designs that DO get printed. So upon submitting my first entry, I had to ask myself, “what do the winners DO that the losers DON’T do?” Being from an advertising background, the (perhaps erroneous) answer came quickly “they promote themselves.” And as others were doing it, and as I hadn’t yet read this topic, that’s what I set out to do… to ‘shamelessly’ promote myself.
I posted my design url outside of the DBH arena, and I emailed my friends, but I really don’t think it has amounted to very much. By and large, one’s votes will come from within the community, as people outside of the community simply won’t go through the trouble of signing up just to vote on a design.
What to do? Once one’s design gets three or four pages back in the votes, they’re basically drowning in a sea of designs. So how can one at least attempt to get their design seen by voters? Make an appearance on as many design pages as possible. That’s all I set out to do.
When commenting on a design, I try to find something nice to say about it, even if the design is somehow flawed. The way I see it, rudimentary designers need encouragement. I have never begged for anyone’s ‘support’ or ‘vote,’ I merely asked them to ‘look’ at my design when they got a chance. Yes, sometimes I was at an entire loss for words… “nice design +1.” I guess I never felt like my single vote for a mediocre design would send it over the top, but I guess if everyone did it, then the DBH voting system would break down. I can see now that it is a ‘bribe’ of sorts, and I can also see why spamming is so strongly detested. And I apologize to all those offended.
But it’s not as though I wasn’t somewhat encouraged to spam. I sincerely wish that if the DBH’s staff had felt the way jimiyo has here expressed, they would have said so in the “your design has been accepted” message… something like, “please don’t spam.” Instead, in said message it read:
“… to help you in your attempts at SHAMELESS self-promotion, copy and paste this code into an email or blog posting to help people vote on your design… Good luck! Now go rally the troops!”It was practically an invitation to spam, and sent the wrong message entirely. I’m a little frustrated by this, and I feel more than a bit stupid. I wish I could change my identity, or go crawl off into a hole somewhere.
I could name off so many people who do this. I just want to go to their profile and tell them to shut up but I hold it back. I did do that to one person though and then he deleted all my comments, haha.

Dodge the Guitars!
well hell! heres to me thinking people actually liked my first sub…ah naivete. Well I do hope some critiques would have came along with it…hehehe. No wonder I was like hmmm…..i got 9 votes already?…way cool…lmao!!! Oh well I hope every one reads this…would be great to hear from people who actually like what you do.
Im so glad to hear that the DBH staff actually realizes that this happens.
thanks jimyo.
I actually ask for people NOT to vote for my stuff. I’m only using dbh as a portfolio site :)
hosting fees, pfffffffttt
I`m really really sick of those “check mine too” comments…
If you commented on my design, of course I`m gonna wonder who`s voting for me and check your design too. If every vote getting a vote in return why voting ? If somebody writes check mine too, that means that one is NOT a designer, just stupid…
I can`t enjoy my design like this thinking if they voting for really liking my design or to just to get vote in return…

lol i dont ever look at those designs cause i just awesome that theyre terrible if they have to spam DBH to get enough votes.
Most of u geeks, have no idea what spam is. U can’t spam and vote at the same time. Spaming is bad, voting is good. If i want to spamDBH, i simply write a small program that spams u to the sky, BUT does not vote at the same time.
So if i say good work +1, think i could also say the some of ur designs suck to the white bone.
Respect.
P.S This is an undercover id, think i spam u again!
HAHAHAHA
I hate spamming as much as the next guy, but I think the whole concept has evolved from the notion of “votes”. The more votes you have the more chance you get at a print. Unfortunately, most new members don’t realise that spam votes actually go against them in the long term. They post random “please vote for me” comments all over the place thinking that it is the acceptable thing.
In all honestly……….I think the spam voting is a simple problem which could be overcome with a stern message from DBH at the point of membership. Gathering votes from all and sundry over the inter-web is fine if the voters are willing to join DBH but random asking for votes isn’t. It messes up our profile page and lowers the credentials………….
Honest truth but not nice from a professional point of view.
Maybe DBH could incorporate a message into their new membership email which stipulates that spamming is frowned upon. Give it to em upfront…………
We all need a good bollocking every now and then….keeps things even.
Yes please, DBH do something! I think it got worse, in the beginning when I joined it didn’t bother me that much but now it’s really annoying, and I just hate those “voted +1” just to see they didn’t actually vote!
i don’t like spam either, but i think with voting system like now, DBH couldn’t avoid the spammers.. they think their designs has buried with tons of new submissions so they need spamming others submisions/profiles to get more attention (votes). DBH should think about new voting system.. i guess
What about this : It`s obvious that weekend time is the most users are coming to DBH. Starting from Monday morning to Friday night we submit our works. DBH chooses 40 of them to vote at friday night. 1 Vote page takes 40 designs. And saturday morning we have the contestants. And during the weekend, for 2 days, everybody votes.

i kinda notice that too… that’s why i don’t bother giving those kinds of comments anymore.. i just comment to some artists who I knew when i got in this site..conversational ones.. i know its not a chat site either, but can we have a sorta twitter thing to send direct msges to an inbox i suppose.? thats just a suggestion.. :)
hey, DBH team!!! i got idea…
what about adding to site options like SORT DESIGNS BY:
-highest and lowest votes….
- newest and oldest…
and maybe most commented….
i think it will give us better chance to look thru designs…
now, there are about 120 pages of designs….i am sure there are a lot of great designs losted…and people have to spend much time to go thru all of this pages…to find it….
also i am for idea to make voting time 30 days…i think it will make better " SPAM" situation here….
biotwist said: that’s a terrible idea and why is it obvious?
because if you check, people gets votes too much at weekend…the main idea in these spams like io_tee said : people think their designs has buried with tons of new submissions…
because people thinks the votes the only parameter choosing prints. But always DBH team makes the last decision. I saw printed designs with 19 or 20 votes, some printed 75-80 votes. People need to know that. And it is not a TERRIBLE idea my neighbor :)
yeah, agree. i’ll never check out the people who’s comments with " Will you check mine out?
http://www.designbyhumans.com/vote/detail….." this is make me sick, may be you guys spammer, you don’t ever said like that and for sur i’ll check ur artwork..comment just comment and don’t hope return back.
this is why i dont have a design up yet. Jimiyo, the last one i tried to get in was okay, but u rejected it?
zebra4 said: this is why i dont have a design up yet. Jimiyo, the last one i tried to get in was okay, but u rejected it?
that means it was not ok :)

Send me jpegs at art@designbyhumans.com. I’ve fairly liberal in approvals so artists can get critiques. If you send jpegs, and there is an artistic reason, I would gladly give you a critique to help you along on your artist journey. ;j
About spamming…
At the beggining clarification ;) I did like 5 comments like this, one day… I’ve got crisis ;) (well comments were not exactly “like this” coz I’m always trying to say smth more than “Awsome” about design), but after that I feel embraced and bad about myself so give up that practice ;)
Mainly, what I wanted to say, is that people should not vote on bad designs when they got a link from spammer. I saw few submissions that were really terrible, and about 100 votes and comment from, may I say, well respected community members O_O and it was like WTF is going on here??!?!?!
So not only spammers are to blame here I think… I know that it’s a simple psychological rule – reciprocity working here. But maybe if we say it outloud it will be easier to drown that rule in case of voting, and just follow only our own sense of aesthetics :)
I am very glad to see you all talking about this. I am brand new to this site only one sub in to date. But as I was scanning and voting through different designs all I saw was “+ 1, check out my sub” type comments. It crossed my mind to follow that pattern but something just feels off about doing things that way.
I definitely agree DBH should make it more clear to new members that "spam posting isn’t the right way to get votes and that votes in general are not the only deciding factor for getting printed.
Also its up to us as a community of designers to not positively reinforce the spammers. If spamming is getting them votes why would they stop. We need to make a conscious decision to not vote for the spammers. Plain and simple that is the only way spamming will truly stop.
I’m glad to see (many) others are as annoyed by this as I am. I find it annoying that people are only voting on my designs so that I will vote for their’s, the whole reason I joined DBH was so that I could get some legitimate critique’s on my designs from other designers so as to improve my own design abilities. But when the only feedback I’m getting is “awesome +1. check out my design and vote if you like”, how is that supposed to help me as a designer. I don’t mind if you don’t like my design, everyone has different taste, but PLEASE don’t comment and vote for the sake of it as it’s a sure way of getting me to NOT vote on your design.
Having said all that I do understand why most of the newbies do it. Though not always the case, votes win and having not been told otherwise they are out to get as many votes as possible; and so I agree with the idea of having a way of tell people when they join that this is not the way to go about winning.
If your design is good enough and you are genuine in your comments then other members will notice it and vote.
I’ve personally never spammed… and I especially hate it when my profile is completely cluttered with spam, spam, spam. Do you people even look at the design and offer constructive criticism? That’s what really draws us to check out your work; if you make an intelligent comment, we’ll think “Hey, that’s not a spammer! OMG!” clicky
=)
Aye!!!.. you shrunk my baby skunkie !!! >:(… it used to be HUGE!.. sheesh!!!
ah well… at least it brought it to the top of the forum…

bump! :) bring it back to the top.. hope “they” actually click on the “forum” tab
WAY TO GO!!!!! WTG jimiyo give it to em. that I-AM-charlie dude is the worst.
Heyyy, welcome in to DBH!! Love your profile pic! I’m keeping a sharp eye out for all your great stuff!
I’ve just got some of my very first designs in for the running, would be fantastic if you could vote and leave a comment, you know you want to!! Whenever you put a new design in just let me know and I’ll check it out for sure!
Charlie :D
nice topic sir, that is a nasty way to promote your design.
please check out my design

this is a good idea but at the same its a bad idea… i mean the voting times are really long and gives longer advantage for peoples stuff to get seen… but on the other hand who really goes back to the 89th page to see whats back there. i guess you dont need to look back many pages if you come on here on a regular basis or arnt new. Sorting out designs is almost discriminatory in a way in my opinion. may just be me but separating the highest votes and lowest and oldest and newest is sorta like saying heres the winners and losers. i dont know if that make sense to everybody. i mean i do try really hard on my designs but also mentioned above was the idea of deleting or placing designs elsewhere that hardly got any votes in 24 hours is sorta mean. my first design i think only got 9 votes on the first day and i was super excited to get even 1 vote but for it to get deleted it probably would have crushed me because i spent all this time on it to be submitted and followed all the guidelines.
When I comment with an “Awesome” or “Love it” [and so on…] I do NOT spam! I mean it.
Basically, there is NO way to difference a non-spam from a spam so, in my opinion, DBH should NOT accuse us by spam.
Deal?…
I am guilty of spamming, but my only intention is to get noticed. Most of my comments on shirts that i chose is sincere. When i ask for support its the decision of that person if the shirt is worth for his/her vote. I thought this is one way of getting votes and get noticed but if call this as SPAMMING then I WON’T DO IT ANYMORE.
Thank you for your post, jimiyo. I appreciate that there is concern and a counteractive movement for this type of vote siphoning. I am new to the site, and while I was initially delighted at the existence of Design by Humans and the social integration into an artistic haven, I was quickly dismayed by the huge roll that advertising debauchery plays in campaigning. It did not take long for me to conclude that the ingenuity and composure of your design is often irrelevant when your promotion is founded on the number of pies you have your fingers in and the hyperlinks you have in comments. That is not to say that I diminish winning designs by any means, as many are the most creative art I could ever hope to wear. It is just disheartening to see a design go under the radar because its creator has the decency not to, for the lack of a more cultured term, prostitute their vote for the sake of their own advancement.
That is not to say that I do not understand beginners to the site who misguidedly would excessively advertise and I acknowledge the communal involvement that this fosters, but it is easy to abuse these communications and disrupt the structure of voting. I thoroughly enjoy the real comments and I hold deep appreciation for those who comment with provocative thought and worthwhile input. I just am at a loss for how turn a blind eye and take the high road when it seems so wrong to ignore.
Thanks for the forum topic Sir..I done that too,by a misunderstanding, shit.thought it’s “shameless self promotion”as a new comer here….im sorry for that..stopped it!
but not in such that bad manner…
there are some who posts links on the design comments like
OMG,awesome +1,vote for me @……(whole link)& yes….i noticed too…

very true
If there were some rules for this ,appreciated…
Cheers for DBH

i think at least DBH can nominate 3 worst spammers and maybe delete their account or burn them alive (this last one will work with 100 % guaranty :)
