Dear Spammers
To the ones that say “Awesome design +1, Please check out my design” and copy/paste it on every entry,
I notice who you are, and this behavior, although it might help you get votes, it is actually counter productive when the DBH Staff and I have to make a decision on what to print.
Just sayin, “Oh, that’s that guy who spams on everyone’s design…” doesn’t really help to put you in good light.
Having been an artist myself on the site, and still participating from time to time, I totally despise spamming comments. I will be ruthlessly vocal in rejecting a design when it comes down to choosing a design between a legitimate vote getter versus a spammer.
Cheers!

ya, when i first found this site, i thought that’s what you were supposed to do to get votes
I believe the exchange rate is 10,000 spam votes to 1 sincere vote
never thought for a second that spammers got over on the DBH staff but it’s good to let them know
Just for everyone’s information… When i comment, I mean it. I’m not a spammer. People might think I’m a spammer just becauze sometimes I only comment like “Awesome! +1.” I only comment and vote for designs that I think are awesome. So if you see iQuitt, that’s legit. haha…
Oh, I also got another spam today. Stop spamming me people! I check out the voting pages from time to time. If your design intrigues me I’ll check it out.
Or maybe “Guide to all newcomers” or “Newbies 101 link” hehe =) or A letter guidelines emailed to the newly signed up.. I think they dont know what they are doing.. And they think its ok..So why not guide them.. Instead of hating. Lets make DBH a healthy place..DBH is growing. =)
Thanks for this! I think there should be a ‘flag this user as spammer’ or something. hehe
When they’re indiscriminately copy pasting the same thing on every design, they know exactly what they’re doing. “ecliptic_dc” for example has posted
“Cool Design. +1
Please check out my designs. If you like it, votes are appreciated.

On every single entry on the first page. They know it’s wrong, but think they can get away with it, or nobody will notice.
yea, this pisses me off. I like to comment when I vote on a design, but I don’t expect a vote in return and mos def don’t beg for it.
ye i agree with the 2nd comment.
i am new and i kinda thought thats how your ment 2 go about getting votes.
i see it all the time, and its not pointed out clearly thats its not teh rite way 2 do it!!!!
I usually do check the link and vote if the design is good. However, I agree, the “check and vote for me” comment will only bring you down. I wonder if someone actually starting this kind of trend, since it happened very often here, as compared to other similar design contest website

^^ what he said. :)
i especially don’t check those dudes. I try to check the new designs often and vote/comment if i really like. Hope they will soon understand that this will get them nowhere. I don’t know if it’s too harsh but there can be a ban system that deactivates spammers design for a period of time and that noone can vote on their designs for a while.

I didn’t notice this at first, but this one is worse than others.
As soon as you click that link, you VOTE.
If you want to or not.
Yeah, I’m new to the site and saw the spam thing going down(I’m a little guilty, I did it probably 10 times on my first day), more so than on other sites it seemed like everyone was doing it.
Now I know, lemmings, jumping off bridges after my friends, etc…
But again, to a newcomer, that seemed like the DBH ‘culture’ of procuring votes. I’ve ceased & desisted, but I think ritzh nailed it, come up with a Newbie 101 or something.
I agree with the spacemonkey. For a newcomer, it really seems like this is how the things work on DBH. I left a few aswell but I erased them later because I didn’t have the slightest intention to annoy the designers which designs I actually liked. Sorry…lesson learned!
and what about spams like " ….cool, +1 check my design….." and after this comment you don`t have any votes…. i had like 2 or 3 coments like this one after the other and no votes!!!!
this is f###g spam…. anyway i am trying to check all this links and i vote for designs which i like, but to be honest it`s feels much better when some people comment and do not ask you to do it back….i am checking their profiles anyway, and vote for them if they got nice designs! ( at list i`m trying to do it…) so, guys let`s be honest to each other and give votes and comments to designs you really like!!!!!

This sounds like a great plan!
I’ve put it on my ever growing to do list.
I agree . Noticed this the first week of becoming a member here. I was like what the hell that guy said the same sh*t about my design to a bunch of others. It would be nice to send out something to everyone to let them know that asking for votes and sending out spam isn’t going to buy them much as far as getting there designs picked goes. I don’t really know how things work here when it comes to choosing a winner but if this type of thing is frustrating for members than i’m sure it’s really frustrating for the staff.

this is what I first think of this site :S
I’m glad to see this post, many of my comments are from these people :)
It’s counter-productive, really… I never look at profiles or designs if people are just asking for votes. If I get legit comments I almost always look to see if they have any entries.
Having an introduction guide for new members would be a great addition. As for me it´s very welcome to see the DBH team takes care of the community in this way and looks after the artists. I browse through the new submissions once in a while and try to see most of them. On the one side for inspiration on the other one to support those I enjoy and think they put effort into their work.
Thanks for this thread. And I am mostly for a positive description so I vote for the introduction guide and show the positive sides instead of the “don´t do´s”. Because those implement “don´t do what we don´t want you to do” which might be understood as “oh yeah a rule to break!”.
When I first joined DBH I felt like I needed to gain attention because so many of the great artists don’t have time to be checking often and tend to miss some good ones and they usually have really useful opinions. (and I was and still am hoping to get to that level) That is why I would write in the profile asking them to check it out, if I annoyed anyone accept please accept me slapping myself right now! BAM! however I NEVER felt like it was right to spam within the comments of someone’s design, that just shows how little you care about what other people are creating anyway.
Wow jimiyo i totally agree with this +1
Hey if its not too much will you check out my desig……<
jk i dont even have any designs
amen..
and if you are “new” and thought that it was what everyone does then the site would be pointless. Take a look around for five minutes and it’s pretty apparent. no excuses. don’t be a jackass.
i am new to DBH. when i first got here i find a lot of people comment like that, so i did the same.
i am very sorry if i annoyed anyone, and i am giving myself a slap on the face too. From now on i will only give out comments to great designs and designs that need more works. i can guarantee there won’t be any spams from me. and I’ll do the best i can to make DBH a great community for everyone.
still i would love to have people visit my design
and please leave some comments if you like my designs, if not please leave on suggestions, so i can improve.
Thank you
what about people like me that put cool design +1 and actually do add +1 because I do like it. I feel the need for some reason to say I dig it enough to rate it and I am not going into specifics “cool design”…
I don’t vote on a design unless I dig it.
I also don’t add “a vote for me”. I figure if you dig it you will vote…

I think that’s fine, I do that too, if you like a design you don’t have to explain why.
If you can figure out how to filter legit comments from the spam +1 vote whores, I think you’d be able to sell that technology to many other shirt sites. I always figured DBH ignored votes anyway and just picked the good designs. At least that’s what it seems, and I find nothing wrong with that.

+1 to that haha
Hopefully this thread changes people who copy/paste for votes. If your design is to my personal taste or I think it’s quality I will vote n comment. I figure people would do the same for my work. There is no trick to getting votes to me other then doing quality work.

I don’t think a large portion of the community ever really checks the forums. It seems like the same dozen or so people are all that post here, and three of them are staff. It will take time for the forums to become popular. Here’s an idea, how about the “Guide to Newcomers” is linked in the process of registering for the site AND in the confirmation email that activates your account. There’s a whole lot of really useful information you could put there. Maybe take it one step further, make a new tab for “newbies” in the forum that you can direct questions to. That’s better than an FAQ because it’s ever evolving, like a wiki, and as such is a resource that can decrease some of the load on DBH customer service.
I think that there is more to it than just saying dont spam. I remember a post a couple of weeks ago that said we should randomize how the designs are shown. If we were to do this somehow i think it would eliminate a lot of spamming. Because like its been said before, once you get down to say page 5 or lower, the number of people who see your design significantly drops. So you may not agree with me, but i personally thing there are more factors to spamming other than what is said. Now there are some people who do it just to try and get votes, but at the same time maybe they are trying to advertise for their design thats at the 15 page that no one will see. Just my way of thinking of it.
I don’t know, there were great designs I never saw for the last 3 contests that got a ton of votes. I think if a design is good, or at least visually interesting, it will get the attention it should.
I did a bunch of browsing to catch up on my voting since I stopped because the Quicksilver and KOL contests were overwhelming (and the filter hadn’t been created yet), and the amount of spammers replying almost turned me off from voting at all. It’s just tacky and fake to see 37 “cool design +1 vote for me http://www.imadouche.com/hereismyspamtee” comments. It makes it feel like I’m going through some kind of cold machine, rather than checking out a human’s actual creativity.
cockergod is right! people can actually die without ever noticing my dearest rubik robot tshirt! :D
randomizing is fair but a little stupid, too many designs there…
maybe we should delete poor designs, set a treshold, like, designs with less than 20 votes in 24 hours go to the SOUP!
or they wouldn’t make it to the second, third page, etc.!
there must be solutions.
i’ll never spam.
i’ve just seen a shit stupid design with like, 120 votes. i think only spammers voted on it :) and they met it through spamming :) spammers playground :)

Randomization is a way better idea than deleting designs for not getting enough votes in a day. That wouldn’t be fair, and would boost spamming if anything.

that’s actually really clever.
A random system like threadless has should work and would be the most fair…. plus the options to see things buy popular, most recent, ect

So you guys surf the design tab of the forums to vote? That’s interesting. I just go to the regular vote page. I still think it would be cool if someone in the community who does a lot of voting took up the task of finding rare gems in the subs every week and posting them in the forums for people to check out. A cliff’s notes, so to speak.
What do you guys think about anonymous submissions? Where the artist’s design has no identifying name or icon on it during voting?
do my spam comments from my designs made half a year ago count against me? i was new and stupid. im sorry! i only did it with the designs that arent up for vote anymore (cause i pretty much left for a few months and came back with a ton of new designs).

no, i’m using the regular vote page, too,
i think the shitcrap design i’ve seen was through a link i’ve found among, guess what, comments! :)
the cliff’s note is a good idea!
but what do you expect for anonymous subs?
thestray: you’re right, that’d actually boost spamming…
agree with you jimiyo, set the rules, I have got enough messages: check my desing, look at my design, next good idea will be separate counter (maybe only visible for you) with will count only votes from people who make shopping or have design to vote and aren’t spammers of course :)
Awesome post + 1! please check out my designs! No but seriously the spamming in the last couple of months has been ridiculous, it’s all over peoples submissions page like the plague ! agreed with ritzh about directing peeps to this post, I think it would curtail the problem alot
