A Discussion on Nudity & Designs

The purpose of this post is two-fold: to satisfy my curiosity and to engage a discussion about this topic. I recently submitted a design for the Kings of Leon contest which was declined. I emailed the staff and they have not gotten back to me just yet, but were I to hazard a guess I believe that it was rejected due to content. As that may be the case I’ve linked the design here instead of posting the image directly, note that this may be considered offensive to some people:

I Melt with You

I admit that my perception of what is appropriate or not may be biased—moreso because my design was effected. I also respect that DBH has responsibilities in maintaining a public site. I’m looking for other viewpoints on this matter. Here are a few questions to get things started:

1)Do you feel it’s appropriate to the Kings of Leon? Does it go too far?

2)Given the following examples of designs in the voting, do you find these less “obscene” than my design?

3)Given that PG-13 movies range in the intensity of sexual themes and nudity, at what point would you say a design crosses that line?

I did answer your email regarding why it was rejected, and the only difference in the second version was that you put a dark gradient in the middle. I think you already know why it was rejected.

1. Yes KOL sings about sex, but DBH doesnt print sex shirts. You have to think KOL AND DBH.

2. Some of the others were difficult decisions, but frankly, it was immediately obvious to me that your design was an automatic rejection. Your design is a Man and Woman having sex. It’s on another level than just some semi nude bodies.

3. It’s not about some ambiguous subjective definition of what’s appropriate. When it comes down to it, It’s what I accept or reject, it’s my opinion.

I apologize I had to reject your submission. It says nothing about the skill of the design. It is well done.

I never got the email Jimiyo, but I appreciate you taking the time to do so. It was not knowing that piqued my curiosity. You don’t have to apologize, by signing up for this site I accept that you make the decisions. I generally push buttons with what I do so my perspective on things is not as utilitarian as perhaps it should be. I don’t agree with your point of view, but it’s not my site and I have to live with it. Thanks for your input.

Maybe for the band, but not for DBH, as jimiyo has stated. And yes, I do think yours is more obscene due to the subject matter. Although, I personally think that it is a fantastic design. Perhaps you will have better luck with it elsewhere.

At the end of the day they want to sell shirts, and designs with uncensored nudity or depicting sex are probably going to be harder to move. I can’t recall ever seeing a shirt in real life with nudity or sex on it.

BTW, I love boobs, and girl butts.

Just sayin…

i think all but the last one (and perhaps second to last) were rightly denied because of the objectification factor – a bunch of semi-realistic (semi)naked ladies on in the design would not sell here. the third one i really really like so that might be why i can sorta see this being wrongfully denied – it is a naked woman, but she is drawn in such an abstracted style i see art not pornography or something close to it. and with the last – i dont see where the sex is, or how its an issue. im just plain confused on that one. it looks like a medical illustration of a female but stylized.

i really like that third one, i think you should try selling it at other places if DBH doesnt accept it cause its a very nice design.

Those other ones were accepted.

I believe all 4 are acceptable, the first 2 are printworthy because of the level of, what is known as ‘sideboob’ and they simply ‘work’ better

Knowing you J’ I would have to say without seeing the design in question, cover the nipples or turn her to the proper ‘sideboob’ angle, I mean really all you want is that perfect female breast curve that instinctively tells our brains, “that is beautiful”

Is it just me or does any one else think the chick on the third shirt is hot?. haha ….. and then finds that quite disturbing that they find a drawing hot….like Jessica Rabbit. Come on, admit it, you though about cartoon sex when you saw her in Roger Rabbit…..........

Oh I’d totally bang that imaginary chick.

Looked at your design and there is no way a site like DBH could or should print it. It really does cross the line, in my opinion. I’m sure you have skills, but sometimes those skills need to be tempered with some consideration for public viewing.

prude! just kidding. its understandable that DBH wouldnt print it – they have a certain image that they want to put out, and this just wouldnt print it.

but how is that last design over the line? im not terribly fond of it cause its just not my style, but it seems waaaaay behind the line to me, not over it.

and the third.. its straddling the line. haha.

I think he’s talking about the “I Melt With You” design, not the last one.
