Creative T Shirt Designs of Dzeri29
Dzeri29 AKA Jerry Maninang has won an amazing 8 SOTD. It’s no wonder that dzeri29 is one of the favorite artists at DBH. Designing all the way from the Philippines, dzeri29’s pieces are incredibly detailed and skillfully executed. He’s got an intricate style that is inspirational to other designers. Dzeri29 let me poke around in his business and ask him some pretty interesting questions.

Q: Hi Dzeri, tell us all a little about yourself please?
A: Before I introduce myself, I want to thank all of you guys for your support & for believing in all my designs. To you wotto, it’s such a great honor to be featured here in DBH and share a little bit of myself.
My name is Jerry a.k.a. ‘Dzeri29’ born in Manila, Philippines. I started designing T-shirts way back in 2002, when my brother asked me to do a design for his workplace. If I remember correctly, I got paid just $25 per design, hahaha!
Right now I have my own family, sweet loving wife and one cute, lovable kid who is always there for me. My everyday life is simple, drinking coffee every morning, read all my emails and then start my work, that’s it!
Q: What grpahic tees are you currently working on? Anything exciting?
A: I don’t have any particular office project I’m working on right now; I must say I have lots of works, thanks to DBH. DBH opened the door to me to some clients who want my service & design. The exposure on the Internet is so great! I feel blessed. Maybe by next year I’ll have lots of entries here at DBH. There will be more collaborations, so you guys watch for those. It’s fun to experience doing artwork with different artists with different styles, techniques, ideas & opinions.

Q: Do you freelance full-time or do you have a day job too, if so what is it?
A: I am a freelance graphic artist right now & I really enjoying it because I have my own time to work and to play. I’m open to have a stable job too, If someone wants to hire me.
Q: Your shirt, Red Sky Universe sold like hot cakes, How did you come up with such a striking image?
A: I can’t believe it sold like hot cakes, because it’s totally not my particular style. Before I started doing that design I was thinking and searching what kind of design would people like to wear? Then I had seen lots of outer space fantasy design, so I decided I would try to experiment with a similar concept and then the ‘Red Sky Universe’ was created. I hope you guys will reprint it again. :D
Q: There seems to be a large number of talented artists coming out of the Philippines in recent years, you included. Do you think this is due to formal training or more people getting interested in design as a career, or maybe something else?
A: Wow! Thanks for mentioning this :D I think both. Based on my experience as an artist formal training is a must to pursue a successful career. But if people want to be a good artist they should have more passion and patience for their art.
Q: You are good at using the T-shirt as a canvas and really utilizing all the space, is that intentional?
A: It’s not intentional. I never really noticed that, maybe I’m just keen on oversized and allover prints. I just want to fill the entire shirt, maximize on the space and make the design worthy of a print.
Q: When you’re not designing T-shirts, what do you get up to?
A: Well, I spend quality time with my family, especially with my daughter. After the hectic deadlines, I’ll resume bonding with my family. I love to draw and paint together with my daughter, help her to do her assignments. Sometimes we go to the mall and watch movies together.
Q: If I asked you to name one t shirt designer who you consider to be an inspiration who would it be?
A: It would be Alex Solis a.k.a. ‘alexmdc’. I’m a fan of all of his work because of his unique concept and sick illustration. Every time I’ve seen his works I have been impressed.
Q: Which of the 8 printed t shirt designs you have at DBH is your favorite and why?
A: I like them all, but the most precious to me is my ‘temptress’ design. I don’t know why. I always love to wear it, almost everyday. I have 4 or 5 shirt of it. Lots of my friend wanted that shirt too. I like the color of the shirt and I how well it matches with the print perfectly.
Q: If you could change one of your shirt designs what would it be?
A: Hmmm! Maybe my ‘Guardian of Existence’ I’d like to see it printed on a light shirt, tone on tone colors and a HUGE all overprint. I would love to see the print emphasize the details of it. I must say that the sketch was the hardest work I’ve ever done.
Q: Finally, If you could select a t shirt design that you think we should print what would it be?
A: The ‘Black Romance’ design – a collaboration work between me & WinterArtwork. That’s my first collaboration ever and it was with one of my favorite artists. I like the design a lot, mixing detailed tattoo designs with bold, simple line illustration. I like the hair the most because of the way it overlaps on the sleeve. It’s such a great mock-up. Even if it’s already expired in voting, I’m very proud if it. Still hoping it will be consider to be printed. :D
