New Star Trek Tees for Into Darkness

The new Star Track movie is soon to release, so we figured to launch a new group of sci fi, space and Star Trek tees to get you inspired. “Star Trek In To Darkness” will in premiering theatres May 17th, with much better effects then the 1970s! Better explosions, crazier weapons, and new technology special effects. We are excited little Star Wars, Star Trek and BSG fans here, and obviously have lots of space inspired designs. Like any great movie premiere it’s always fun to dress up a little, or support your favorite “space suit.” We have put together a few space and sci fi tees so you can “go to no where no man has gone before;” or to the New Star Trek movie.

Best Surrealism Tees Make your Reality a Dream

The best surrealist tees mash up part dream and part reality. The designs use physical objects and distort or rearrange them in an abstract way. Artists like Salvador Dali and Joan Miro highlighted the golden age of surrealism around 1930’s. Since then we have seen surrealist photomontages, abstract photography and 1000s of fantasy like drawings. The best surrealist artworks are those with a little culture or story to go behind them to communicate an abstract language.

We are lucky enough to have a couple of great surrealist T-shirt designers in the Design By Humans Network. Roncabardz is a great example of a surrealist T-shirt designer. With a shirt like the painter you can see the reality and the fantasy worlds overlay.

Radiomode is another talented artist that can dream up some really interesting t-shirts. We have “catch the stars” which mashes up surrealism and well as the impressionism

LukeBatten is a designer who merges the human form with a TV set to make an intriguing and surreal image. Striking and bold, this tee has had a spot in the top 50 Most Wanted Tees for some time now.

Moncheng makes subtle references to Surreal Art with ‘Tears of Color’. A unique illustration of an eye crying a rainbow of color. The surrealist vision comes to life in this multi colored design. It makes you turn and look and question, the very essence of surreal art.

Finally Kase is a great master of mixing montage to create something obscure as well. He takes multiple real objects and integrates them into one. ‘I dreamt of Another Place’ is a surreal t-shirt design with a clock a, koi, a mask is a meshing tornado dream. Kase has many cool designs focused around Surrealist themes.

Megan Lara's Art, Work and Play

Every once in a while a designer enters the T-shirt design world and literally makes everyone's head turn with their amazing art. Megan Lara is one such person. Her beautiful art has excelled her into new worlds and an impressive client list is unfolding. A recent winner at Design by Humans with her retro French poster inspired piece, It Makes the Heart Grow Fonder we thought it was time we had a chitty chat with this new star and found out more about her.

Megan Lara Talks Art, Business and Fun

You have a distinct style that harks back to Art Deco style and particularly the work on Mucha, when did you first discover this art movement and what pulled you towards it?

 I first discovered Mucha/art nouveau/deco right after my wedding. My husband was really sick, and I had taken a few days off to take care of him. I was leafing through some of the art books I'd gotten as wedding presents, and one of them was a compilation of Mucha's works. Immediately I was hooked. I had always loved drawing realistic portraits with thick lines, and that was something Mucha did extremely well. He was a HUGE inspiration to me, and I thought it would be great to re-imagine some of the biggest figures in pop culture in his style.

A little birdy tells me that you have an array of wigs and you are into the phenomenon known as Cosplay? What is that and how did you get involved?  

I have a wig addiction. I have, like, 15 wigs and only six costumes. I got into cosplay after I had several people tell me I had a strong resemblance to Rose Tyler, and that I should dress up as her. After dressing as her for the first time at C2E2, I was hooked. It's so much fun getting to be someone else for a day or two, and the challenge of creating your own (or recreating) a costume is SO much fun.

Your art is gathering some serious attention and I saw that you recently did a cover for Dark Horse's Willow comics. Very cool, how did that come about and do you plan on more comic art in the future?

I got an e-mail from Scott Allie one day, saying he and Joss wanted me to do the variant covers for the new Willow: Wonderland comic, with David Mack doing the main covers. I pretty much had to change my pants after reading that e-mail. Doing comic covers had always been a dream of mine, and working with Dark Horse (on a Joss Whedon property!!!) has been the highlight of my career thus far. I am so hoping they decide to work with me again. They are a great company and I had so much fun working with them.

You seem to know your pop culture references pretty well, are you a nerdy girl? What is your favorite TV show, Game and Nerdy item currently?
I'm a huge nerd. Right now, my favourite TV show is Community. My god, a show has never captured my attention so fully. It's smart, funny and just freaking amazing. And I got to participate in the Six Seasons and a Movie Art Show (put on by Pixeldrip) this summer. Dan Harmon bought two of my pieces, so I suppose I am partial to it now. :) As far as games go, I am waiting (impatiently) for my husband to get done with Bioshock: Infinite, so I can delve into that. Other than that, I play Civ pretty much daily. I love RTS games.

Tell us a little bit about your process, how do you go about making such highly detailed, amazing art?

Typically I take an hour or two to gather references. Deviantart has a wonderful stock section that I often use as inspiration. If I can't figure out how something is supposed to look, I go there and it's very helpful! I have a pretty simple process, to be honest. I do a really rough, pretty ugly sketch. I refine it once, then tighten the lines up again (making sure to mirror it several times so I can tell where my mistakes are) before I start colouring. If it's a t-shirt design, I make sure all the lineart is not anti-aliased before I begin. I do a messy flat colouring and then tighten it up. After that, I add gradients/shading and then halftone all those last. All colours/gradients are on separate layers. Doing digital paintings is much easier—sketch, refine, paint.

You have a huge number of followers and fans. Do you have any tips for up and coming designers on how to build a community all of your own and market your work?

Try and respond to everyone, and share your work and updates often, but not too much. There's a fine balance between being active and annoying. And don't be afraid to show your work! With the internet, it's easy for people to steal your work—and that understandably scares a lot of people off. Watermark everything and be diligent about looking for art theft. It will happen, but it shouldn't discourage you from showing the world your art. :)

Don't be afraid to take criticism. Do art every day. Be humble and be kind. It may sound obvious, but really appreciate the people who like your art!

If you could only draw one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Women! I love drawing soft, curvy things—so what's better to draw than the female form? I just love romantic, feminine things. Women with flowers, and jewelry and pearls.

You have a very strong work ethic and have worked with many clients, which was your personal favorite and why?

My favourite so far has been Dark Horse. It pretty much fulfilled my life's goal of doing comic book covers. Joss Whedon is one of my favourite creators, ever, and hearing that he liked my art enough to want me to do art for him.. such an amazing feeling, and I could not be more grateful! And they put my art on a car—how freaking cool is that?

What's the next big project(s) you are working on? Anything new in the pipeline? Any submissions for Design by Humans lurking around the corner?  

I'm working on another project for Quantum Mechanix that may or may not be Joss Whedon related... :) I'm trying to do a lot more original art lately, as I'm really enjoying the series of women I've started painting. I have a couple sketches for possible DBH shirts :). I probably oughta get working on those...

Finally, you walk into a bar and there are three famous people waiting to buy you a drink, who are they and why do you want them there?  

Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer and David Tennant. I don't think I can mention why I'd want them there and still keep this interview rated PG.

New Shirt Design Trends from the Collective

A new wave of talented collective shirt designs has surfaced at Design By Humans. New styles, subjects and themes have further increased the diversity of designs available. Qetza has been grinding the gears of fine line and fantasy. He has more the 30 elegant designs to choose from with great line work and subtle colors. SilentOp has also been busy trying out new styles from music themes to urban designs.

Where did the T Shirt Frames Come From?

For 8 years in a row Umbra and Pratt Design Competition have hosted a product design competition. The T Shirt frame, designed by Caleb Ferris and Prakhar Mehrotra, was the winning designs in 2012. The design includes a simple frame shaped as a t shirt, a template to fold up the t shirt around, and special padding to keep the t shirt fitting in the frame.

The t shirt frames are available in white or black. The viewable area of the shirt design is around 13” by 19”. This might require some cropping of the design, but most shirts fit nicely into the frame. It’s a great way to keep your special tees in great condition. Awesome Illustrative T Shirt Design Tips

There are lots of different t shirt design techniques out there from photo realism, to abstract patterns to illustrative. This will be a multi part series on different design techniques with different styles of graphic illustrators, drawings and digital painters.

Illustrative T Shirt Designs

Illustrative t-shirt designers are masters of the pencil and Wacom tablet. Often times you will see them drawing out an imaginative design using the traditional pencil and pad. Many designers then scan the design into Adobe Photoshop to digitize the art and make it print ready. They load up Photoshop and grab the Wacom tablet for some serious designing. Retracing the original design sketch to create a digital format. This allows you to edit, add detail, fix errors, rotate and save different layers of your design.

Digital art allows the designer the freedom of adding and taking away elements at the click of a key. The art comes alive with different brushes, stroke widths, textures, and personal drawing techniques. Below there is a sample of an artist using a brush tool to really show the hatching highlights, and adding the lights and shadows to the details. Once you have the pen in hand and cruising around the canvas there are tons of different textures, brushes and line drawings to test out. Check out this video tutorial for a ton of different digital art styles. Check out how just changing your brush can make for a very different style of art.

Detailed Drawings and great line work really make your t-shirt design stand out in a crowd. Developing a cool style of your own allows you to be recognized amongst a sea of artists. If you’ve been a fan here at Design By Humans for a while you have seen the famous lions, tiger, bears and owls printed on our top quality tees. We occasionally get blessed with more fantasy creatures like unicorns and dragons.

So what animal best represents your style? What is your spirit animal? We have made a list of the best animal shirts from around our site to help you on your adventure. What is a spirit animal or an animal that represents your style? Well, the animal that you can relate to the most. Are you sly and smart as a fox, powerful like a lion, light hearted like a panda or cuddly like a kitty? SXSW was filled with artists, musicians, hipsters and innovators. CraveOnline and Design By Humans showed off their skills as entertainers and designs. A full day of live designers, bands playing and networking conversations. Free t shirts flew from the bags as the Street Team walked around meeting new fans and handing out free gear. The Crave the Grave contest produced some great results, as every body was a winner. Both the live designers turn out some amazing results. The winning artists were by DeadbugDesign and Casebooth, both extremely talented artists, and now you can buy one of their art pieces as a shirt by DesignByHumans. *Design By Humans Invade SXSW* Last Week Design By Humans took to the streets of Austin to meet and greet our amazing community. We took along our street team members and the winners of The Crave Online Contest. Free tees and other goodies were handed out and we met a host of awesome people. SXSW Live Art Battle Revealed

The culmination of a 4 week journey concluded yesterday at SXSW in Austin Texas. DeadBugDesign and Cabooth took center stage at the CraveOnline venue with an epic showdown of both art and skill. The live contest theme was "Crave The Grave" and each artist had 90 minutes to complete their design. No easy task when the place is full of people watching every line you make on a large scale projection!

DeadBugDesign on the left came out of the gate strong with a dominant SXSW music theme. A powerful fist explodes through the grave holding a microphone, the cord wrapping around the arm as it dramatically bursts through the soil. DeadBugDesign even added a Design By Humans logo and SXSW type to finish the design off with a unique concert poster feel.

Cabooth on the right started with detailed line work from the get go. A detailed illustration unfolded showing skillful line art. With time against him Cabooth utilized every second with masterful stroke after masterful stroke. Adding shading and small details the image started to come to life in the first ten minutes. The theme rested heavy but the grave element was captured and the final piece had cool rendering and an almost three dimensional feel.

Each artist worked through "Crave The Grave" concept with passion, conviction and both were asset to the Design by humans event. The battle raged for 90 minutes but in the end both artists were victorious. Beautiful art was created, good times were had and a few beers were clinked together is celebration. Both artists were ambassadors to Design By Humans and represented the ethos of empowered artists. New Bright Futures lookbook photoshoot

The Bright Future photos shoot was brought together with a collection of epic neon styles. The inspiration came from the upcoming music festivals that warm up the summer nights. The night life will be ready with bright t-shirts, DJ’s, dance music and colorful lights. The Bright Future Photo shoot was composed of fun costumes, cool colors, and unusual lighting. First Things first, Make Up!

After trying out some new textures, we had fun with the rainbow effects we got off the iridescent photo backgrounds. Now we're ready for the intragalactic space party.

The Retro Tv helped us out with testing the lighting and backgrounds of each of the photo sets.

Then we powered up two 48" black lights and got some cool color harmonies and contrasts.

What’s going to be the new trends for 2013? Well, it depends on the overall style you are personally going for. New trends happen because a new item goes viral. The fastest going trend we are looking at is neons and electronic dance music to continue a mass appeal amongst music fans. The good vibe music, fun atmosphere, bright lights and creative attire will all continue to grow. Bright, fun festival t shirt designs are a cure for the winter coldness. Thus, the beginning part of the spring has been dedicated to this trend featuring creative, abstract and bright colored neon tees.
