silentOpSilentOp Artist Interview

Live Video Chat with silentOp on Thursday May 3rd at 4pm PST!

Q: Your design seems to focus on Batman and his relationship for Gotham City, was this an influence in the piece?

A: The idea came from my design Steel Life. Since I wanted to do a series of it, I decided I would base the idea from there. That would be my Gotham City. At first, the only thing that I wanted to focus on was on the emblem. I did several sketches of it, placing the logo silhouette over Gotham. Inclusion of Batman on the piece came to me when I noticed the design seemed to be lacking something, the design at that stage only showed lines of buildings, nothing too spectacular on it. So I decided to put Batman gazing up at the Bat signal rising above Gotham. I didn't want to clearly show Batman's face so I blended it with the silhouettes and building details.

Q: The design is also very icon and clever in it's composition. Were you aware of the impact the design had as you were designing it?

A: Yes, that was my goal. I really wanted it to make an impact; I wanted my design to be very iconic. Something that is different from the other entries because I knew that most of the very talented Artists here would focus on Batman and Bane.

Q: What do you plan on doing with your winnings?

A: All of it will go to my children's school. Next month will be my 3 kids' enrollment. Ouch!

Q: Can you tell us how you work on a design like this, what is your process?

A: Just like everybody here, I start my concept with a rough sketch. When an idea comes I immediately draw it into my mini sketchbook. I usually do that because sometimes I will forget to remember everything when I'm busy with my job. Then I'll scan it and trace it in Photoshop. Prepare the components in Photoshop and start retracing it again until its clean and final. The final product will be presented to my friends and members of the family for critique. Sometimes I don't see things that they see so I always seek their comments.

Q: Of the thousands of entries, was there one in particular that stood out to you and why?

A: I'm always following the works of my brother Jerry(dzeri29). His "End of the Dark Tales" impresses me a lot. So, proud of it...

Q: Vertical lines play a part in lots of your art, is this a style that you intentionally pursue or just a cool coincidence?

A: My designs reflect my job. It shows my drafting works experience.

Q: When promoting for this contest, how did you go about getting votes and spreading the word?

A: I just posted and promoted it on Facebook, Tweeted my friends and published it on my Behance profile.

Q: You had one of your designs rejected but then accepted after minor alterations. Did you learn anything from working with such a big company and having to work within the constraints of specific branding?

A: Yes, I realized that its not because it looks good its already acceptable. It maybe nice and perfect to others but dealing with a big company you should always remember to follow their rules, especially if there's a specific brand to promote.

Q: You essentially used only shades of blue to create your design; do you think using a limited color palette helped your design to stand out?

A: Blue is my favorite color but I'm not limiting myself to only using that shade or even limit the number of color palettes to use. But yes, I noticed that most of my designs now are limited to just 2-3 colors. I want my subject to stand out or make an accent to every piece. That is why I use a black background and just put a splash of color on my subject or on the accent.

Q: Finally, If you got the chance to design for Warner Brothers again, which of the Batman characters would you most like to create a design for?

A: Mr. Freeze. I like his suit, and most especially his gun. And again maybe because of his cool blue/cyan motif...
